SR-108 East Sonora Bypass Phase II Project Blasting Scheduled for Today |

Sonora, CA...The Caltrans crews will be blasting on Friday, May 10, 2013, near the construction site for the State Route 108 East Sonora Bypass Phase II Project. Blasting is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and Caltrans anticipates being done around 4:00 p.m. Roads will not be closed for blasting and traffic should not be impacted.

Murphys, CA...Two major grants recently awarded Mind Matters by community foundations will allow the Murphys based clinic to extend its services in Amador and Tuolumne counties. The non-profit clinic exists to help individuals and families to cope with the consequences of autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD), and learning disabilities through treatment, counseling, and education, and to promote a better public understanding of these debilitating health issues....

TCU 2013 Fire Season Begins With A New CAL-FIRE Unit Chief |

San Andreas –With this year’s dry conditions the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU) transitioned into fire season on May 1st, much earlier than normal. CAL FIRE’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit incorporates the State Responsibility Areas (SRA) in Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Eastern Stanislaus County and Eastern San Joaquin County. The 2013 fire season also comes with new leadership. On May 1, 2013, Josh White was appointed to the TCU Unit Chief position. Former TCU Unit Chief, Brian Kirk, retired in March 2013. Chief White began his career in 1988 as a Firefighter I. Since then he has worked a variety of assignments including State and County fire stations, Conservation Camps, Fire Prevention, Civil Cost Recovery, Law Enforcement, Safety, Research and Development as well as served on various working groups and cadres. Chief White has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice...

Since 1984, when President Reagan signed a proclamation urging citizens to observe the first full week of May with “appropriate ceremonies and activities,” the tourism industry has continued the tradition.
For 2012, tourism nationally generated $2 trillion in economic output with $855.4 billion spent directly by domestic and international travelers who also contributed $129 billion in tax revenue. The tax revenue alone saves each US household $1,060 per year....

Tuolumne County, CA... The prescribed fire is located south of Pinecrest and adjacent to Forest Service Roads 4N26 (Crabtree Road), 4N68Y (Sheering Creek Road), and 4N10. Locations are Township 4N Range 18E Sections 21, 22, 27, 28.
Ignition of the Experimental Forest VDTS Prescribed Burn will commence on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 and continue through late May. Burn days will vary slightly and are contingent on weather, fuel moisture, and air quality. All burning is monitored and conducted in accordance with state and county air quality guidelines and closely coordinated with local county air quality control districts....

Yosemite National Park Rangers Recover Body of Missing Hiker |

Yosemite, CA...Yosemite National Park Rangers have recovered the body of missing hiker Kenneth Stensby near the base of Vernal Fall. Stensby was fatally injured after falling from a cliff near the top of the waterfall. His body was discovered by Yosemite National Park Search and Rescue Ranger personnel and was extricated at about 1:00 p.m. today....

Jamestown, CA...On May 5, 2013 at 7:42am a 23 year old Jamestown woman was driving her Chevy Malibu northbound on Hwy 49 at approximately 40 miles per hour. She averted he attention from the roadway when she looked down at her cell phone to push the speaker button. When she looked back at the roadway there was traffic stopped directly ahead of her.
