Angels Camp, CA...In a number of previous articles I found myself writing about protecting yourself from the dangers and pitfalls of technology, so I think it is only fair to write something positive about the many advances technology has brought to our daily lives. Virtually all facets of our lives are affected by computers and technology. How we work, pay bills, play and communicate with each other have all changed drastically over the past 20+ years....

The good news is that we are talking about computers. What happens when you're innocently surfing the internet and suddenly find yourself facing messages telling you that your computer is severely infected with spyware and viruses and for a small fee "their" anti-virus can take care of the problem for you? Who are "they" anyway ?...

It is becoming more and more common for the average household to have multiple computers connected to the internet. At the same time, Wireless Home Networks are becoming more popular. You would be surprised how many times I have been somewhere with houses nearby, jumped on my iPhone to check email, and see insecure wireless networks popping up with generic names like “default”....

As it starts getting closer to summer and warming up, we all need to think more about our computer. Most of us don’t give too much thought to the computer when it starts getting hot, but an overheated computer is not a happy computer. Apart from potentially causing permanent damage, a hot computer runs slower....

The internet is a terrific resource full of great information. Unfortunately it is also a dangerous place full of malicious sites and predators many of whom would harm our children. There are some basic steps you can follow to help keep your children safe while on the Internet. Only allow your children to use a computer located in a "Public" part of your home such as the Family Room. You can occasionally glance over to see what they are doing without them feeling that their every move is being scrutinized....
