Should Angels Camp Place a Cannabis Business Tax on November Ballot? |

Angels Camp, CA...This Tuesday, May 1st at 6;00 pm at Bret Harte Theater, the city council has to vote on agenda item 7c, whether to put a ballot measure on the November 6, 2018 election asking voters to establish a business license tax on the gross receipts of cannabis businesses, if such businesses are permitted, in an amount not to exceed 15%. Sonora, CA...Nearly 500 community members and Adventist Health Sonora staff attended the ribbon-cutting celebration at the new Health Pavilion and Diana J. White Cancer Institute, which was held on April 30 in honor of the birthdate of the late Diana J. White. Members of the White family traveled from across the country to attend. The Cancer Institute was named in honor of Diana J. White at the request of her husband, George White, who left their entire estate worth more than $3 million to help Adventist Health Sonora provide world-class cancer care to the community. The Health Pavilion and Diana J. White Cancer Institute is ready to open but awaits assessment by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

Report Shows Tourism to Yosemite National Park Adds $589,343,700 in Economic Benefits |

Yosemite, CA...Report shows visitor spending supports 6,666 jobs in local economy. A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 4,336,889 visitors to Yosemite National Park in 2017 spent $451,782,000 in communities near the park. That spending supported 6,666 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $589,343,700.

Gross Domestic Product: First Quarter 2018 (Advance Estimate is 2.3%) |

Washington, DC...Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.3 percent in the first quarter of 2018, according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter, real GDP increased 2.9 percent. The Bureau emphasized that the first-quarter advance estimate released today is based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency (see “Source Data for the Advance Estimate” on page 2). The "second" estimate for the first quarter, based on more complete data, will be released on May 30, 2018.

Consumer Confidence Index Increased in April |

New York, NY...The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® increased in April, following a decline in March. The Index now stands at 128.7 (1985=100), up from 127.0 in March. The Present Situation Index increased from 158.1 to 159.6, while the Expectations Index improved from 106.2 last month to 108.1 this month. The monthly Consumer Confidence Survey®, based on a probability-design random sample, is conducted for The Conference Board by Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and analytics around what consumers buy and watch. The cutoff date for the preliminary results was April 12.
