Calaveras Unified School District Fall Op Ed---2010~by Mark Campbell |

| San Andreas, CA...Do we focus on what we don’t have? Or, instead, do we choose to focus on what we are doing with what we do have and what we have control over? Yes, we could cite the sobering statistics that reflect our reality. We could point out that since 2008 we have lost 383 students and our revenue allocation from the state has dropped by $871 per student. We could illustrate the significant cuts to programs already implemented (layoffs of teachers and support staff, reduction in administration, elimination and reduction of some music and sports programs) and rail against the relative injustice of the cuts ..... |

Letter to The Editor on District 5 Race~by Marti Crane |
|

Mr. Spellman came to Rancho just prior to the Copperopolis debate for an open Russ Thomas 'Town Hall' meeting (ask anything - no pre-arranged format). He saw how much we appreciated the one-on-one dialogue over local issues but failed to recognize that this event was called by Mr. Thomas. A debate is a politically charged arena and must have a planned format. Prior debates were called and organized by others, with rules all agreed to. For Mr. Spellman to accept the invitation and then think he has a right and the authority to derail the entire process is arrogant and delusional. This was not the first debate he cancelled or with which he claimed ‘conspiracy’.....

Letter to the Editor~by David K. Singer |

|
| Dear Editor: On June 8th of this year, as I was watching the election results on television, my phone began to ring around 9:00pm. With only 5% of the precincts counted, the local newspapers were already calling to ask who I was going to endorse for District 5 Supervisor in the November runoff. I appreciate the sensitivity in allowing me time to deal with the disappointment. But in thinking about it, I concluded there was no need to rush into any kind of decision. After all, there was still a lot of time to “campaign”. There was 5 more months for the two remaining candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the issues, what ideas each have for operating the county with declining financial resources, and without ..... |

Letter to the Editor~by Sherri Reusche CUSD Board Trustee |
|

| Dear Editor, The State of California has decided to spiral our economy out of control and horrifically impact our Children’s Education. I was elected to be a Calaveras Unified School District (CUSD) School Board Trustee six years ago and have seen our District in good times and in bad. I have fought countless hours in Sacramento on behalf of our State’s children. As a Trustee I am always trying to educate anyone who will listen about the budget and the difficult decisions that must be made in order to keep our District solvent. We have very difficult decisions ahead of us and I am not sure all those involved understand the great magnitude of how desperate our School District is about to become.... |

Letter of Endorsement for Carolyn Lott~by Bertha Underhill |
|

|
| Carolyn Lott’s success as a Trustee for the Yosemite Community College District will be because of her drive and determination towards educational excellence. She brings the right, important tools to the challenge which started with her teaching career as a base for her future career. She entered into public service serving as a city council member for three terms. She was able to balance staff recommendations with constituent requests while .... |

Letter of Endorsement for Carolyn Lott~by Don Stump |

| I would like to introduce you to a remarkable individual. Carolyn Lott is a candidate for Yosemite Community College District trustee. It is rare to find such a qualified person to represent us in a local office. YCCD trustee is normally not a popular office that draws top quality candidates and Carolyn has the necessary qualifications that would easily position her to run for a state wide office. We are indeed fortunate she has decided to run for trustee. From teacher, to City Councilwoman, to distinguished facilitator, her career positions her to successfully represent our District in Modesto..... |

Dear Editor, I would like to give my endorsement to Carolyn Lott for Trustee of the Yosemite Community College District. I know that Carolyn has a long list of credentials in civic leadership. She has also held many positions in governmental and policy making bodies. Those are some reasons I am backing her for the Trusteeship.....

Letter to the Editor~by Darren Spellman |

|
| I offer my apologies. I would like to express my regrets if I offended or disappointed any constituents of District 5 regarding the scheduled debate in Copperopolis on Wednesday 10 /13/2010. That was certainly not my intention. I am not a politician. I am a taxpayer, a husband, a father and friend, who wants the best for his community. I have grown frustrated with a political process nationwide that has become so corrupt that the taxpayers never really have an opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns or even vent criticism of their elected officials and candidates for office in an open public forum. The ..... |

| Dear Editor: The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce has a long standing tradition of hosting ‘Meet the Candidates’ forums. These meetings are presented to give citizens of the County an opportunity to meet Candidates and understand their positions on the issues that are important to the County. Last night, together with the Copperopolis Area Business Association, the Chamber hosted a Candidates Night in Copperopolis for the Supervisor Candidates in District 5 - Russ Thomas and Darren Spellman. ..... |

| Academic Improvement in the Vallecito Union School District has been steadily upward for the past four years, and all three schools are within range of an API (Academic Performance Index) of 900, which will put our schools on a par with the best Bay Area Schools. This school district, VUSD is in the process of implementing a new 5 year plan, titled the 4C’s (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration), which is a 21st Century Model preparing our students to be competitive in a World Economy.... |
