Letter to the Editor...."Supervisor Spellman- fighting for your rights"~by Darren Spellman

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 09/16/2011 04:15 PM
On September 13th a man from Rancho Calaveras came before the Board of Supervisors to ask for help because he was being required to buy FEMA flood insurance from the federal government for $3,500 per year and at that rate he may have to lose his home because of his already tight financial situation. Our current Congressman, Dan Lungren, has had meeting after meeting (at our request) and gave promise after promise with no real action and people are still paying outrageous amounts for flood insurance that they will never need. I gave the gentleman from Rancho Calaveras my card to contact me for help and admittedly remarked that part of the problem is that our elected Congressman is a moron....

Patriots in Forest Meadows~by Richard Gutierrez

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 09/07/2011 12:43 PM
This 10th anniversary of the September 11 attack, the American Flags will fly in Forest Meadows as they have for national holidays. I just wanted to highlight Mr. Robert Nethery who is responsible for the purchase and scheduling of the flags. Not only do we now have the larger flags, but if you come through the gates, each mail box and street sign post gets a flag. I suggest that you contact Mr. Nethery for details, but I wanted to see how we could acknowledge him in your next newsletter. Bob was the spearhead a few years ago in getting the small flags for each of the mail box posts. Then two years (?) ago, the larger flags were purchased with money donated ...

Letter to the Editor~by Mike Shevlin

I submitted an e-mail to the Pinetree that was titled Five True Sentences and felt I should reply to this posting. I was asked the following;

Mr Shelvin, a few questions for you.
1. Are the poor always lazy, leeches with no need for government help?
2. Should the unemployed always be considered lazy, leeches with no need for government help?
3. Should our government avoid helping those who cannot help themselves?
4. Is there no obligation by government to require the fortunate to contribute to those in need?
5. Do you really think 50% of the people in this country are not willing to work to better their lives?
You and your statements are a scary joke.

My response...

I am not anti-gun, but ranges need to be in proper locations, not next to ranch lands. Yes, let’s use a little common sense. The Coe project was approved by the planning commission with no thought of surrounding area, and in a zone where a shooting range is not similar to other uses, nor was it approved in that zone....

Letter To the Editor "The Mightiest Vote" By Eric Jung

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 07/23/2011 03:32 PM
Bear Valley, CA...Pericles of Athens was said to skip many of his assigned meetings so that he would be taken more seriously when he did show up. Supervisor Spellman has taken the Periclean gambit to its extreme, showing up for one vote in the last five minutes of a two hour meeting after missing entirely the first 4 meetings of the Central Sierra Planning Council to which he was appointed in January by the Calaveras Board of Supervisors. He accused Supervisor Callaway of "tattling" when she noted his absences. But it can't be tattling if it's a matter of public record in which the constituents are likely to be interested...

Letter to the Editor~by Al Segalla

Dear Editor, The noise and fury coming out of Washington regarding raising the debt limit may have a silver lining. The public is beginning to understand fundamental economics and will eventually elect representatives who also understand. Things may get worse before getting better, but they will likely get better with a well informed electorate. Now is the time for truth. The truth is we have a massive spending problem and not a revenue problem. Raising the debt ceiling to allow more spending is not the solution, but part of the problem.....

Letter to the Editor~by Peggy Rourke~Nichols

Dear Editor, I have noticed more tagging since the 4th of July holiday, I shrugged it off, thinking "It's not my responsibility". This morning, this is what I found, new to me,as of today. I am sending you the censored version of the photos I took. A coat was on the side of the road so I covered the sign with it, for now. I notified the Calaveras Dept. of Public Works and the Sheriff department as soon as I could this a.m.....

Calaveras County Taxpayers Association Letter to the Editor ~By Al Segalla

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 06/29/2011 08:22 AM
Dear Editor,

This is in response to the Guest Opinion and news article regarding Supervisor Steve Wilensky’s proposal on reorganization of Calaveras county government.

Steve is right, in that it is time for new ideas. Also, a number of changes he proposes do make sense, such as cross training and charging reasonable fees for services.

We have concerns about consolidation of departments and creating a five member “Cabinet”....

Started writing about my feelings on the issue of the Coe Shooting Center. Thought some of the media might also take an interest. I feel that there is something not being shared with the public regarding all of this. If there is, it more than likely didn’t start here nor will it end here. My property is at the opening of the shooting center. My husband’s family has lived in this area for over 70 years, and were some of the residents that approved the re-zoning for the cement plant, who by the way, they were employed by......

Letter to BOS Regarding FEMA~by David Tunno

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/07/2011 08:08 PM
(Note: Following is a letter read to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors today, June 7, along with some of the supporting material attached to the letter and delivered as a package to each member of the Board.)

In March of this year, I presented the Board with a research article on examples of FEMA’s flood plain designations in Calaveras County with analysis and recommendations for Board and public actions. I outlined FEMA’s motives in greatly expanding the flood insurance pool and its strong arm tactics in dealing with counties and property owners. I showed examples of properties placed in the flood plain that couldn’t possibly flood and I outlined the abuses of FEMA’s monopoly power. Since then, I have ....
