Red White and Blue Fly Over Angels Camp!

Posted by: Patrick_Works on 02/16/2012 09:22 PM
Angels Camp, CA...Recent (completely un-scientific) surveys around Calaveras County have found that area residents have three favorite colors; red, white, and blue. All three were in evidence today, as the City of Angels Camp received a gift of colors; American colors. The Angels Camp Veterans' Memorial District saw that Angels Camp had no flags to fly during national holidays. Having found the need, they filled it in a hurry. Today in Historic Downtown Angels Camp visitors and locals alike were greeted by Old Glory waving above Main St....

Welcome to the Country~by Charity Maness

You know you’ve moved to the country when:
• You’re little fuel efficient car is viewed as just another bump in the road
• Any flotation device is thought to be, and utilized as, a ‘fishin’ boat’
• There are all of five last names in a town boasting 2000 people
• The food you eat at a bbq was once grazing in someone’s front yard
• Anything green and mowable is considered lawn
• A broken toilet becomes an opportunity for someone with a green thumb
• A rusty old tractor is not trash…its eco lawn art
• Composting is just a new fangled word for manure spreading
• The population of the entire county is less than the city where you previously resided.....

Welcome to the Country~by Charity Maness

So you’ve decided to move to the country where kids use all the resources available to them to embrace the spirit of the country. After hearing a story told by one of my friends of how her son had recently and proudly I might add roped a chicken, I figured it would be just fine to tell of my roping experiences with my brood of country wannabe’s. Now unlike my friend and her brood which were raised on a cattle/sheep ranch with acres upon acres of land to roam, my children were raised for the first nine years in a small coastal town. We had what I considered to be a large lot, but when compared to the country…well, let’s just say, it paled in comparison. So when my friend reiterated her hilarious story of her son’s roping adventures “ropin’ anything that moved” it got my mind a spinnin’.....

So you’ve decided to move to the country where creativity is the name of the game. The word ‘creative’ encompasses so many different aspects of our daily country lives that it’s hard to put it all in a nutshell. So to start with the basics: There is creative writing. Most of us have managed to endure some form of creative writing in our lives, be it a high school portfolio autobiography or the general education requirement of creative writing. While this broadens our mind it doesn’t necessarily apply to today’s line of thinking. Then there is creative as in knitting, sewing, welding, painting, artsy type creativity. Luckily for us in the foothills artists abound! .....

So you’ve decided to move to the country where sometimes we need to be reminded that there are parts of the country that are slightly more odd than us. What follows are a few musing from my latest trip to Kentucky with Wyatt and mini Wyatt....With seemingly every visit to Kentucky within the past year my mere presence has brought on monumental flooding, destructive storms and tornados, the locals are beginning to think I might be kin to mother nature herself. So of course this visit, being no different, brought twister warnings within the first day of arrival. So, what to do while waiting for a possible twister? Soak in a friend’s pool of course. That would be a friend with a basement; friends with benefits takes on a whole new meaning round these parts. Pools and basements rank way up there in the benefit department. Just FYI, teeth are pretty low on that list......
