San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center will hold its 23rd Annual Fall Health and Community Resources Fair Saturday, September 30, 7am - Noon at the Hospital Campus. A wealth of information will be available on senior support and health services, health insurance information, long term and short term care. Also participating are experts in chronic disease management, mental health, nutrition and personal well-being. Low cost health screening and services include the five-panel blood analysis, including chemistry panel, thyroid, complete blood count, lipid panel, iron for women, PSA for men, and vitamin D deficiencies for $45. Those participating in the blood analysis should fast after 10PM the night before. Flu shots will be offered at no cost.

Murphys, CA...Based in Los Angeles, this old-timey punk rock revivalist band goes by the name of Water Tower. They released their debut album “Fly Around” on March 27, 2020. This is the sixth album for founder Kenny Feinstein, but the first since kicking the bucket (the band was formally Water Tower Bucket Boys). The album is a ten-track collection of songs rooted in bluegrass and folk, indie rock and a dash of electronic landscaping. This album represents a transition for Feinstein and the re-birth of the band in it’s neighborhood of Echo Park in Los Angeles. The new album manages to blend psychedelic and punk influences weaved into their traditional love of Bluegrass and Americana instruments, creating their mixed bag of branded music. Arnold, CA...The Friends of Sierra Nevada Logging Museum's Annual Logging Jamboree is held Saturday of Labor Day weekend on the grounds of the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum. Even with the cool damp weather this year's event was an axe throwing, crosscut sawing, chain sawing success. In the Logging Competition there was, Axe Throwing, Jack and Jill Bucking, Choker Setting, Hot Saw, and more! We tried to take enough photos and video to have this as a rolling archive of the event. There are over 150 photos in the photo album at the bottom of this post & over 2 hours of video of almost all the events.

California Leads the Way Again with Nation's Highest Poverty Rate

Washington, DC...The U.S. Census Bureau announced yesterday that real median household income in 2022 fell in comparison to 2021. The official poverty rate of 11.5% was not statistically different between 2021 and 2022. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) rate in 2022 was 12.4%, an increase of 4.6 percentage points from 2021. This is the first increase in the overall SPM poverty rate since 2010. Meanwhile, 92.1% of the U.S. population had health insurance coverage for all or part of 2022 (compared to 91.7% in 2021). An estimated 25.9 million or 7.9% of people did not have health insurance at any point during 2022, according to the 2023 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC). That compares to 27.2 million or 8.3% of people who did not have health insurance at any point during 2021.
