West Point, CA...With 4 Structures Lost the Point Fire was tragic for some but there was thankfulness for the great work by firefighters and first responders in keeping the rest of the community safe.

West Point, CA...Vegetation fire in West Point area near Highway 26 and Higdon Road, Cal Fire is on scene, mandatory evacuation for Higdon Road, Higdon Spink Road and Spink Road. Stay out of the area, evacuation centers set up at West Point Community Church and Pioneer Sierra Baptist Church at 26355 Buckhorn Ridge Road in Pioneer.

Fire Update from a West Point Resident

West Point, CA...Very Early this morning West Point was hit with a fast wind driven fire that rapidly moved through a residential area of West Point. The Sheriff's Dept evacuated approx 50 homes, and most of the evacuated have had to head over to Pioneer(Amador) evacuation center as highway 26 and spink road are both closed north/east of town.

Exhibition runs October 8 through November 26, 2017 At Petroglyphe Gallery 8317 Main Street, Mokelumne Hill Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea is a celebration of Dale Laitinen's favorite places seen while crisscrossing the great state of California.  Laitinen states, "Twenty years ago my wife and I chose Mountain Ranch, uprooting home, studio, family and pets to a beautiful place tucked away in Calaveras County.  The now infamous Butte Fire swept through our area and destroyed all that we had built for those years.  Crossing California is a rising from the ashes exhibit as a way of moving forward from catastrophe."

Kirk Silveria, 62 From Merced Lost His Life in Hwy 49 Collision

Mokelumne HIll, CA...Kirk Silveria, 62 From Merced was riding his Harley Davidson northbound on SR-49 south of Big Bar Road at an unknown rate of speed. A 2013 Ford was traveling southbound on SR-49 south of Big Bar Road, directly in front of a 2007 Toyota. Mr. Silveira rode across the double yellow lines into the southbound lane and collided into the left rear of the Ford. The Harley Davidson then collided into the front end of the Toyota. He was subsequently ejected and sustained fatal injuries. It is unknown at this time if drugs and/or alcohol were a contributing factor in this collision.

Local Film "Common Ground" Nominated For Numerous Awards

West Point, CA...When filmmaker and award-winning writer, Lisa Michelle, of West Point, decided to bring her screenplay, Common Ground, to life, she knew that Calaveras County was the perfect location. The rural atmosphere and the children who reside in West Point, Wilseyville, and Rail Road Flat represented the authenticity in the story that Michelle wanted to tell. The supporting characters and extras were cast entirely from Calaveras County residents.
