Mokelumne Hill, CA...On Sunday May 1st, at 5pm the Calaveras Arts Council is hosting a "bring your own basket" picnic to celebrate the well-deserved retirement of Executive Director, Mary Jane Genochio, and wish out-going Office Manager, Wendy Muster, all the best in her expanded life in San Francisco. At the same time we will be welcoming Kathy Mazzaferro as Interim Executive Director. Bring your favorite picnic and libations, chairs, maybe even your guitars as we recognize these three outstanding leaders..

Major Injures In Angels Camp Suspected DUI Collision Last Night |

Angels Camp, CA...A 36 year old Murphys man was traveling northbound on SR-49 north of Copello Dr. at a high rate of speed. An Angels Camp police officer was following his Chrysler 300 with emergency lights activated in an attempt to make an enforcement stop. A 41 year old Pine Grove man in his Ford F250 was traveling northbound on SR-49 ahead of the Chrysler. A 54 year old Mokelumne Hill man in his 2012 F550 was traveling southbound on SR-49 approaching the other two vehicles. The Murphys man allowed the front of his car to collide into the left rear of the Pine Grove man's pickup. He was able to regain control after the collision and safely slow to a stop on the shoulder. He lost control of his 300 and spun into the southbound lane.

$50,000 Grant Given For Butte Fire Rebuilding Efforts...Contractors & Funds Needed For 80 Homes |

San Andreas, CA...A $50,000 grant from the California Endowment was given to Calaveras Recovers recently through the Amador Community Foundation, which is the fiscal sponsor of the local group dedicated to recovery from the Butte Fire. In April, concrete foundations were poured for the first two homes being built by Calaveras Recovers for the uninsured survivors of last year’s Butte Fire. Licensed general building contractors and specialty contractors such as plumbing, electrical, sheet rock, roofing and painting contractors are encouraged to join up with Calaveras Recovers, by attending a meeting such as next Monday, May 2, 2016 at the LDS Church in San Andreas.

Angels Camp, CA...Visitors and residents can enjoy a relaxing and memorable rafting experience on the 2016 Mokelumne River Rafting Adventure on Sunday, May 22. Local rafting company O.A.R.S. has secured a Special-Use Permit to raft a gorgeous, mostly gentle, six-mile stretch of the Mokelumne River as a thank-you gift to community members who donate $75 per person to the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation. The water is flowing this year, so OARS is able to offer a choice of three trips: 8am, noon, or 4pm. Seating is limited and available by advance reservation only. Information and reservations are available online at CalaverasMentoringFoundation.org, or by calling the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation at (209) 736-7706. West Point, CA...Colby was born November 18, 2001 in Fresno, California. Colby was an active and prominent 4H member showing guinea pigs, rabbits, pigmy goats, and pigs. He loved being a member of the West Point's basketball, soccer, and T-ball teams. He was also a Webelos Cubscout participating in pack meetings, events, and outings. Colby was a friend to many and great at leading others at the local community center's food bank, keeping meticulous records. He devoted time and energy to provide services for others in need and loved his music.

West Point Teenager Succumbs To Shooting Accident Injuries |

West Point, CA...On 04/20/16 at 3:40 PM, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office responded to an area described as a quarry near the 1100 block of Bald Mountain Road in West Point for a male juvenile who had been shot. A 14 year old male and 16 year old male, both of West Point, were reportedly bird hunting in the area when the 16 year old allegedly accidentally shot the victim. The victim sustained injuries to his face and upper body. Fire personnel and paramedics arrived on scene and transported the victim to Mark Twain Hospital.

San Andreas, CA...The 48th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Bee pitted the county’s top spellers against each other on Thursday, April 14th at the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks gymnasium. Assistant Superintendent Scott Nanik, the spelling moderator of the event, read words from the Marin County Junior High Spelling Word List. The students wrote the words down, and proctors checked the students’ efforts to spell them correctly. Each student was allowed to misspell three words before being disqualified.

Traffic Update...State Route 26 From Shelton Road To State Route 49 |

Calaveras County, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform one-way traffic control on eastbound and westbound State Route 26 (SR-26) from Shelton Road to SR-49 for striping operations. Crews will begin work on Sunday, April 17, 2016, through Friday, April 22, 2016, from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Motorists should expect 15 minute delays. Alternate routes should be taken whenever possible.
