Local Wineries Win Big at the 2009 Calaveras County Fair Wine Competition....Newsome-Harlow Wins Best of Show and Took the Zin Showdown ~By John Hamilton

Frogtown, CA...With 309 wines entered this 2009 Calaveras County Fair Wine Competition is was Big, Bold, and had a definite spicy note. According to local wine expert and part of the judging panel Doug Brown is was the "Best Calaveras Wine Competition yet in size and overall quality." Local Winery Newsome-Harlow won Best of Show and won the Sierra Foothills Zinfandel Showdown for their 2007 "Donner Party" Zinfandel. Hatcher took Best of Show in the Dessert Category with their Viognier Ice Wine 2007. Many of the local wineries took gold including, Indian Rock, Milliare, Bodega Del Sur, Frog's Tooth, Black Sheep, Ironstone, Lavender Ridge, Zucca Mountain, Chatom and more. We stopped by Frogtown as the judges were finishing their work for the day. They were a tired and happy group. One of the things that really struck us signifying the quality of the wines was that after the tastings were finished the judges...

Vallecito, CA....The May 24, 2009, Twisted Oak Winery benefit dinner for Calaveras Big Trees Association has been rescheduled to Sunday, May 24, 2009 on Memorial Day Weekend at 6:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the dinner will support CBTA in their ongoing commitment to provide interpretation of human and natural history at the park. Twisted Oak Winery, located at 4280 Red Hill Road, Vallecito, will feature a grilled chicken dinner, including wine for $35 per person. CBTA member volunteers will serve and clean-up at the event. Douglas Flat, CA... A little over a year ago we had the pleasure of spending 30 minutes with one of the integral parts of the local wine industry, Gay Callan of Chatom Vineyards. Gay Callan and Chatom Vineyards have been growing and producing great wines here locally in Calaveras County since the early 1980's. Now with over 20 area wineries and more on the way we thought it would be a great time to spend a few minutes getting to know one of the people and businesses that has been here for much of the industry's growth. Gay is a native San Franciscan but her family has deep farming roots in the Central Valley.

Murphys, CA...JUST IN !!!!! A new beer from "Oskar Blues" Brewery in Colorado, makers of the popular canned beers "Dales Pale Ale" and "Old Chub Scottish Ale". This beer is simply called "Gordon", but it is anything but a simple beer. Huge floral hoppy nose with restrained bitterness and a nice malt balance, this is a sipping IPA, in a league with our Green Flash IPA on tap......

Visit Ironstone Vineyards Above!

Murphys, CA....Come on out and celebrate Daffodil Days with Ironstone Vineyards on March 21st and 22nd. Spring has sprung and the daffodil days are blooming. We welcome the Northern California Daffodil Society for their regional daffodil bloom competition and the Calaveras Garden Club with their arrangement display. The Daffodil Society will host their exhibit at the winery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday....
