"Billie Hammer" The Last Sheepherder of Calaveras County!

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/29/2008 12:09 AM
San Andreas, CA...We thought we would run this lovely story for you again that we ran back in August.....We had the extreme pleasure of meeting Billie and Mike Hammer, of San Andreas early one morning this week, to find out what sheep herding is all about. If you saw the movie "Babe", everything will seem familiar to you except the pig. Billie Hammer is the last known free-range sheepherder of Calaveras County. She has goats or sheep for over forty years. We even had the pleasure of meeting retired Sheep Show Dog, Coy. Coy is a $10,000 trained competition sheep herding dog, just like in the movie "Babe." Billie mentioned that her job would be impossible without the help of Coy each morning. Coy can round the sheep up, make them turn left, turn right and hardest of all, park them...
