A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs 48 to 63 higher elevations...63 to 71 lower elevations. Snow level above 8000 feet. Prevailing south winds up to 10 mph shifting to the west in the afternoon.

Lows 27 to 42 higher elevations...40 to 48 lower elevations. Prevailing southwest winds up to 10 mph shifting to the southeast after midnight.

Arnold, CA....The Calendar says that spring is here and the detailed forecast for West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada is below along with the Warnings. Tonight, At lower elevations, rain showers likely in the evening, then rain after midnight. At higher elevations, rain and snow showers likely in the evening, then rain and snow after midnight. Lows 25 to 40 higher elevations...37 to 45 lower elevations. No snow accumulation lower elevations...1 to 7 inches higher elevations. Snow level 6500 feet. Prevailing south winds 5 to 15 mph with gusts to around 30 mph...except southwest 20 to 30 mph over ridges.

WHERE...Western Plumas County/Lassen Park and West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada. Advisory in effect from 11 AM Friday to 5 PM Saturday.

Traffic Update....Hwy 140 Closed in Ferguson Fire Burn Scar Area

Mariposa, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is planning a pre-emptive closure of State Route 140 in and near the Ferguson Fire burn scar beginning at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. This is due to an ongoing storm that could impact the roadway, and the closure is scheduled for the sake of public safety. The estimated time of opening is dependent upon the impact of the weather. This closure will take place for approximately 17 miles from Bear Creek near Midpines to Foresta Road in El Portal – approximately 4 miles west of the Yosemite National Park entrance. Risks for this stretch of roadway in storm conditions include mudslides and the movement of debris, such as rocks, onto highway lanes.

Arnold, CA...Heavy snow and strong wind Tuesday night into Thursday. Pacific storm will bring moderate to heavy snow and strong wind beginning Tuesday afternoon into evening and continuing into Thursday morning. Motorists planning travel into the high country this week should check the latest road and weather conditions, and be prepared for hazardous winter travel. Periods of light to moderate snow showers continue Thursday into Friday as snow levels lower into the foothills. Increased flood potential Tuesday into Thursday...Moderate to heavy rain expected Tuesday night through Wednesday. With streams, creeks, and main stem rivers running at high levels, and already saturated soils, additional rain will increase flooding potential.

Arnold, CA...It will be another busy week along the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada. the National weather service in Sacramento has added a Flash Flood Warning for good measure as well. Tonight: Heavy snow showers and heavy rain showers. Windy. Lows 22 to 36 higher elevations...34 to 42 lower elevations. No snow accumulation lower elevations...19 to 25 inches higher elevations. Snow level 5000 feet. Prevailing south winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts to around 55 mph...except southwest 30 to 50 mph over ridges.

Sacramento, CA...The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the mountains and a flood warning for lower elevations. An active next several days ahead with snowfall in the forecast through at least Friday. A major winter storm will arrive later today and continue into Thursday. Unlike previous systems, snow levels will rise several thousand feet tomorrow (possibly reaching 7000-8000 feet by the afternoon). Here are the latest thoughts for those traveling to the mountains.

Blizzard Warning Above 6,500 Feet Beginning Wednesday Evening. Some Areas May Receive Up To 9 Feet of Snow

Arnold, CA...The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Blizzard warning for our area. Carson, Ebbetts & Sonora Pass areas are forecast to receive the deepest layers of snow from these systems. Heavy snow expected above 5000 feet. Blizzard conditions expected above 6500 feet beginning Wednesday evening. Travel will be very difficult to impossible, including during the morning commute on Thursday. The combination of a heavy, wet snow with high winds may down power lines and trees. Between 5000 and 6500 feet, total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet, with localized amounts up to 4 feet, are expected. Above 6500 feet, heavier snowfall is likely with accumulations of 5 to 7 feet, locally up to 9 feet.

Bear Valley, CA...The National Weather Service Sacramento is forecasting a busy weather week for our area along the West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada. Today Rain and snow. Breezy. Highs 23 to 38 higher elevations...36 to 45 lower elevations. Snow accumulation of 4 to 10 inches. Snow level 3500 feet. Prevailing south winds 5 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Gusts up to 50 mph. Over ridges...prevailing southwest winds 25 to 35 mph increasing to 25 to 45 mph in the afternoon.
