The Donnell Fire Morning Update...27,769 Acres, 20% Contained, Fire Edges Closer to Spicer

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/12/2018 09:39 AM
Pinecrest, CA...The fire laid down slightly through the night. As temperatures drop and humidity rises the fire is expected to be fuels driven less than wind driven so low fuel moistures and spotting will remain a concern. Structure protection continued ahead of the fire as it progressed slowly in an easterly direction at Kennedy Meadows and northeasterly out of Disaster Creek. Firefighters are making headway in an effort to protect Bennett Juniper by cutting hand and dozer line across Eagle Drainage. Mop up and hazard tree removal will continue in green pockets between structures along Hwy 108. Wildland use modules will continue working on the south-side of Spicer Reservoir in Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.

Donnell Fire Forces Closure of Carson-Iceberg Wilderness and Spicer Lake, Spicer Campground Still Open

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/10/2018 09:12 AM
Bear Valley, CA...Closure of Carson-Iceberg Wilderness and Spicer Lake has been ordered by the Forest Service ahead of the Donnell Fire. A Forest Closure Order for the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness on the Summit and Calaveras Ranger Districts went into effect yesterday. Spicer Reservoir is also within the closure area, campgrounds are open, but the lake is closed to visitor use. Highway 108 is still closed at Eagle Meadow Road from the west and at the top of Sonora Pass on the east side. The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office has closed the gate at the junction of Highway 4 and Highlands Lake Road (Forest Service Road 8N01). The Pacific Crest Trail has also been closed between Highway 108 and Highway 4 for public safety.

Donnell Fire Continues to Grow, Growth Heading into Alpine & Upper Calaveras. Now 23,824 Acres

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/10/2018 10:00 AM
Pinecrest, CA...Last night structure protection continued along Highway 108 including backfiring operations east of Douglas tract and around Baker Station. Crews also worked around the Bennett Juniper completing containment lines and allowing backfiring operations in the area, increasing protection around this legacy tree. Today’s red flag warning combined with critical fuel conditions may create the potential for rapid fire growth. Yesterday air support dropped 42,000 gallons of retardant along the Highway 108 corridor continuing structure protection in these areas. Fixed wing and helicopter support will continue today.

Donnell Fire 8am Update August 9, 21,097 Acres, 6% Contained, 136 Structures Lost

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/09/2018 08:59 AM
Pinecrest, CA...The fire pushed further up the Arnot and Disaster Creek drainages to the northeast. The fire crossed Douglas Creek on the north side of Highway 108. Overnight crews continued to make progress constructing dozer and hand lines off the Eagle Meadow (5N01) Road. Increased fire activity is expected today due to the lifting of the inversion layer and stronger southwest winds. Structure protection continues to be the priority along Highway 108 and the Eagle Meadow Road, including protecting the Bennett Juniper.

Hwy 4 High Country Update....Campgrounds Open at Spicer & Alpine, Gates Closed Into Highland Lakes

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/08/2018 04:56 PM
Bear Valley, CA...We just checked in the the Alpine County Sheriff's Dept on the potential impacts of the Donnell Fire in our neck of the woods. Today they closed the gates back into Highland Lakes as a precautionary measure. Campgrounds are all open with the only changes is the Spicer has been closed to all watercraft. Probably so helicopters can dip from Spicer without need to watch for watercraft. The Donell Fire has entered parts of Alpine County. Luckily Spicer is a very long lake and natural firebreak.

Donnell Fire Update....13,814 Acres, 5% Contained, Hwy 108 Still Closed

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/07/2018 10:31 PM
Pinecrest, CA...Fire spread was minimal today due to the inversion layer, although acreage did increase by about 2,000 acres due to better field verification. Calm conditions stayed in place most of the day allowing crews to focus on structure protection; clearing vegetation and extinguishing hot spots. The poor visibility continued to hamper air attack operations, but hand crews were able to put in several miles of line on the southwest side of the river. Firefighter and public safety, and structure protection continue to be the primary objectives of the fire.
