The 2008 summer growing season is looking to be a very try situation and this adds incredible stress to our favorite trees. Boring insects can literally sense when some trees are under stress. In addition, stressed trees are less likely to be able to fend off an attack. Most all trees can be attacked. It is critical that trees be planted correctly, irrigated appropriately, and fertilized regularly to avoid these stress issues.....

Local Farmers Help Schools Create Community Gardens

In a schools initiative launched by FoCuS (Foothill Collaborative for Sustainability), local farmers, parents and community members are working together with two local schools to set up community gardens. The program which began last year at the Sierra Waldorf School in Jamestown, expands to Michelson Elementary in Murphys this spring. The land has already been plowed and a cover crop grown however volunteers and community members are needed on April 18 at 12:30 p.m. to do some prep-work like putting up....

In England, New Zealand, Australia, and many other parts of the world hedgerows are widely planted. They provide beauty and wildness while providing wildlife habitat and wind protection on rural lands and farms. Hedgerows are long rows of mixed woody shrubs and trees that once commonly framed the rural landscape. Farmers often planted these as "shelterbelts" or "windbreaks" and birds added their own contributions to hedgerows by depositing shrub, tree and bramble seeds in their droppings.
