Sweet basil is easy to grow, very useful in the kitchen, and easy to store. Basil is as beautiful as it is useful. Foliage colors range from pale green to emerald, vivid purple and purple laced with gold. Texture varies from silky and shiny to crinkled and matte. Brush against its foliage or crush a leaf, and basil releases a wonderfully spicy fragrance. Varieties include cinnamon, lemon and anise.....

Newly transplanted vegetable starts really benefit from some protection against the wind, sun and cold for at least a week after planting. Wind can dry out tender young plants and temperature changes can shock, dry out, freeze damage or even kill them. Angels Camp, CA....The 23rd Annual Calaveras County Science Fair went on this weekend at the Calaveras County Board of Education Office. Students who entered their project participated in interviews for the judging of their experiment. Projects were judged in two categories, experiments and displays. The Calaveras County School Science Fair provides opportunities for all students in grades 4-12 to explore areas of interest and then creatively exhibit them......

Calaveras County, CA....It was a big night for the Calaveras Visitors Bureau when they recently participated in the California Travel and Tourism Commission’s (CTTC) San Francisco Media Event held at the Ritz Carlton. The CVB came away with some great contacts as well as some recognition that Calaveras County can be proud of.....

Copperopolis, CA....The town of Copperopolis held a Community Plan Meeting tonight at the Copperopolis Fire House to talk about the vision of Copperopolis. In attendance was Supervisor Russ Thomas, the Plan Community Update Committee Members, others who have contributed to the plan, CDA Director, Stephanie Moreno, Nathan Atherstone from the County Public Works Department and many local residents from Copperopolis. One of the big topics of discussion was Parks and Recreation and how to enhance the recreation and trail opportunities around the....

Caper, is a native of the Mediterranean area, as well as of the tropics. The plant grows about two feet tall and spreading. The vines can be 7 to 10 feet long, and have a very deep root system. The plant is very drought resistant, needs little cultural care, requires good drainage, and is practically free of diseases and insect pests. The fruit is green, elongated, 2-3 inches long, 1/2 - 3/4 inch in diameter, and contains 200-300 seeds. The leaves are oval in shape, leathery and shiny green.
