Posted by: thepinetree on 06/16/2009 07:02 PM
Heat, drought and pests make early summer a difficult time for foothill vegetable gardens. Cool-season cole crops like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are especially vulnerable. In warm areas, broccoli heads brown, cauliflower flowers too quickly and cabbage heads crack....

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/14/2009 11:20 AM
The saying, "An apple for the teacher" takes a twist; now "Two teachers for the Apple" is more apropos for The Red Apple Bakery and Fruit Stand.  A welcome scene from days gone by on Highway 4, Lloyd and Christie Bunch and their children, hailing from Hughson, and extended family have been welcoming visitors old and new to the Darby brothers' Red Apple just north of Darby Russell Road. Lloyd Bunch, a former Agriculture teacher, can tell you everything about fruits and vegetables as well as the history of the Darby Ranch, still owned and operated by the Darby’s.....

Irrigation Key to Vegetable Production~by Ken Churches

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/02/2009 10:36 AM
As hot, dry weather begins to stress home gardens in June, proper watering is critical for healthy young vegetable plants and quality produce. Watering is both a science and an art. Gardeners should learn to spot signs of water stress on plants. Water-stressed lettuce can be bitter, for example, while tomatoes and chile will often develop dead patches at the tips called blossom end rot. Water-stressed chile also tends to become more pungent, although over watering it can also increase incidence of chile wilt. Water-stressed sweet corn, meanwhile, can be poorly pollinated with fewer kernels on the ear.....

Plant Lima Beans, Okra, and Brussels Sprouts in May~by Ken Churches

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 05/28/2009 10:21 AM
Now is the time to plan for a late summer harvest of lima beans, okra and Brussels sprouts. Lima beans prefer warmer weather than green beans and germinate best at soil temperatures of 65 degrees F or higher. Climbing or pole varieties, like 'King of the Garden,' produce flattened butterbean-shaped cream-colored seed and may take up to 88 days to produce. Plant in hills three feet apart with three to four seeds per hill, training vines up poles tied together in a tripod. 'Speckled Calico' ripens 10 days earlier, producing large colorful beans with a full-bodied flavor. Heat-tolerant vines will produce well throughout the summer.....
