Sutter Creek, CA... If you are like most gardeners, tomatoes are number one in your heart. Most of us eagerly anticipate the first delicious fruit of the season. We are all looking for the perfect tomato. Saturday, August 31st is your chance to put your tomatoes to the ultimate test! Amador Master Gardeners are sponsoring a tomato judging and tasting at the Sutter Creek Farmers Market.
Bring at least one washed tomato of each variety (at least five cherry tomatoes) to the Sutter Creek Farmers Market by 9:30 AM on Saturday, August 31st. The judges will announce their favorites at 10:30 AM. The largest tomato will receive a special award.
Join us for the public tasting and you will have the fun of tasting all kinds of tomatoes, from tiny grape-size tomatoes to giants the size of grapefruits, and a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, pink, tiger striped, and of course, ruby red. We are sure to have a tomato you’ve never tasted before and that may become your new favorite.

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Home & Garden Show is this weekend at Frogtown. It will be filled with a wide variety of local businesses just waiting to help you with your next project. We stopped by the Tuolumne County Home and Garden Show on April 13th to see how their show was progressing. The crowds were large and happy and Calaveras County's businesses were some of the largest exhibitors with Middleton's, Pinnells Airserve, Carpet One, Calaveras Lumber and more on hand and selling. Jackson, CA...Forty million acres here in the United States are devoted to turf grass, an area almost the size of the country of Greece. We irrigate these lawns with an estimated two trillion gallons of water each year, which is three times greater than the amount of water used on the nationʼs cornfields. Here on the West Coast alone, 60% of our water use goes toward watering lawns. Monetary costs for keeping these residential green carpets weed and pest free are staggering with an estimated $25 billion spent annually, much of it to spread 70 million tons of fertilizers and pesticides.
