08/25/2018 - Mike Marshall & Caterina Lichtenberg, August 25th at Twisted Oak Winery in Vallecito!
Vallecito, CA...Mike Marshall is one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile string instrumentalists in America today. In 2014 Mike was nominated for a Grammy Award for his recording with the Turtle Island Quartet in the ‘Classical Compendium’ category. Mike is indeed a living compendium of musical styles. A master of mandolin, guitar, mandocello and violin, he has created some of the most adventurous and interesting instrumental music on over 40 recordings to date that seamlessly blend his American roots background with a deep understanding of Brazilian, European classical and folks styles and American jazz and pop music.

Whether playing his own compositions with Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck or Chris Thile, Brazilian choro music with Hamilton de Holanda or Baroque classical music with his partner, German mandolin virtuoso Caterina Lichtenberg, Mike is able to swing gracefully between all of these musical worlds with a unique blend of virtuosity and musical integrity that is rare in the cross-cultural musical world of today.

Caterina Lichtenberg is one of the most important classical mandolinists in the world today. Raised in Germany, Caterina graduated with highest honors from the Music Conservatory in Cologne. She now holds the position of Professor of classical mandolin/soprano lute at that prestigious institution. (The only position of its kind in the world today) For over 20 years Caterina has been recording, teaching and touring throughout Europe, Japan, Taiwan, South America, Canada and the U.S. to rave reviews.

“As arguably the world’s foremost mandolin/mandocello player, you get to hear some amazing performances, but also some richly
melodic tunes that range from bluegrass and European folk to jazz and Brazilian fusion.” — All About Jazz

Advance tickets are only $29 and can be purchased right here online. Concertgoers will be admitted starting at about 6:30pm - please carpool! - the show starts at about 7:30pm. Admission is $10 for children under 12. All proceeds from children's ticket sales will be donated to support music education in Calaveras County.

Tickets will be $35 at the door. Please order now!

A yummy BBQ rib dinner with side salads will be available for purchase for $15. Delicious Twisted Oak Wines, popcorn, cookies, & soft drinks will also be available for purchase. Please do not bring other alcoholic beverages. Our license does not permit it.

Seating is "festival style", first come first served - but all locations are good! Bring your own low back "beach" chairs for up-front seating. Click here for everything you might like to know about our concert venue.

Please note: Advance ticket sales end at 4pm on the day of the event - or when sold out. After that time tickets - if available - will be available at the winery after 6:30pm. In any case, all ticket sales are final and there are no refunds.

Swinging gracefully between bluegrass, jazz, classical and Brazilian musical styles, Mike Marshall is one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile mandolinists. He began his career as a member of The David Grisman Quintet in the 1970s and has toured and recorded with Stephane Grappelli, Mark O’Connor, Chris Thile, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck. On radio Mike can be heard on the “Car Talk” (NPR) soundtrack alongside Earl Scruggs, and he wrote the theme music for San Francisco’s KQED talk-show “forum.”

Mike can be heard on the Sony Classical label with bassist Edgar Meyer, violinist Joshua Bell and mandolinist Sam Bush as well as recordings with the Swedish group Vasen, the GRAMMY-winning ensemble The Turtle Island Quartet and his bluegrass band, Psychograss, on his own Adventure Music label. New standards of mandolin virtuosity have been set by Mike’s recordings with fellow international mandolinists Chris Thile (US), Hamilton de Holanda (Brazil), and Caterina Lichtenberg (Germany).

As a featured soloist Caterina Lichtenberg has performed with the New Century Orchestra under Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, the LA Guitar Quartet, the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, Germany under Diego Fasolis and the Aachen Chamber Orchestra. She has also had concerts with the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Orchestra under Fabio Luisi, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly, the MDR Sinfonie Orchestra under Howard Arman, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Lorin Maazel, with Brigitte Engelhard (harpsichord), Thomas Mueller-Pering (guitar) and with Art Garfunkel on live German TV.

Mrs. Lichtenberg’s collaboration with American mandolinists Mike Marshall brought together two of the greatest mandolinists in the world. Their debut recording in 2010 blurred the lines between their classical, jazz, bluegrass and Brazilian musical backgrounds. Their 2015 CD is a recording of Johann Sebastian Bach duets for mandolin and mandocello (The Two Part Inventions, Organ Duets and 3 Canons from the Art of the Fugue).

09/22/2018 - Calaveras County Arts Council is Proud to Present the Annual Calaveras County Artists Studio Tour
San Andreas, CA...Thirty artists in nineteen locations throughout Calaveras County will open their homes and studios and display their artwork during the Calaveras County Arts Council Artists Studio Tour on September 22-23. The self-guided tour, free and open to the public, is an opportunity to meet the artists face-to-face, learn about their artwork, and discover treasures you will want to take home. Tour maps are available at businesses and public places throughout the county, as well as from the Arts Council. Call 209/754-1774 for more information, or go online at calaverasarts.org.

The kinetic and motorized sculptures by Vicki Burnham Wilson are a terrific addition to the gardens, gypsy wagons and blacksmithing at Michel Olson’s studio off Appaloosa Drive between Angels Camp and Copperopolis.

Ryan Anderson brings back the romantic art of vintage letterpress printing at his studio on French Gulch Road.

Sharon Strong’s masks (Pictured: Maori) are powerful pieces of art that remind us of our own spirits.

Shay Baker fills her Sheep Ranch studio with simple designs full of fun and fancy.

There will be a special preview reception for Artists Studio Tour at the Gallery store at 22 N. Main Street in San Andreas on September 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. A general membership meeting will be held for the public as well. Artworks by the artists on the Artists Studio Tour will be on exhibit and there will be light refreshments; everyone is invited.

Touring for art

Calaveras County is rich with creativity. On September 22 and 23, you can experience that creativity up close and personal on the free, self-guided Artists Studio Tour presented by the Calaveras County Arts Council. Free guides are available throughout the county and at the Arts Council in San Andreas; a free map is available for download at calaverasarts.org.

There’s a lot to see. Thirty artists in nineteen locations will exhibit their artwork, opening normally private studios and homes to the public. You can meet the artists, learn about their artwork, and discover treasures that you’ll want to take home. And this year, some of the artists are participating in an abandoned art project; during the week before the tour, keep your eyes peeled for artwork left in public places as a free gift to the finders.

Every corner of the county will be represented. Starting in the Valley Springs area, you’ll find three artists conveniently located off Baldwin Street. Marlene Chapple fills her studio with oil paintings, hammered copper jewelry, ice-dyed scarves, and amazing encaustic work. From there, head over to Sue Carracedo’s studio to be charmed by her colorful watercolors and acrylics. Nearby, Brad Stone is a new addition to Artists Studio Tour, creating impressionistic landscapes and scenes of classic cars and horses in acrylic paint.

A short ride to Mokelumne Hill will bring you to Acme Art on Center Street, where four artists will show their work. Owner Ann Cook makes joyful collages and mosaics, as well as new jewelry she creates from repurposed older jewelry. Deborah Marlene’s glowing watercolors and alcohol ink paintings on tile will share the space, along with Lynne Sutton’s whimsical assemblages and watercolors. New this year, Kevin Brady brings his watercolor illustrations and paintings to Acme Art as well.

A few blocks away on Clark Street, oil painter Sue Smith opens her home and studio to show her strongly designed work, featuring landscapes, animals, and portraits.

It’s a bit of an adventure to Lower Dorray Road in Glencoe, but it’s worth making the beautiful drive to see the four artists on that street. Brenda Montelongo’s jewelry, made from glass beads, silver forms, and stamped metal would be tempting enough, but alongside Sonya Ziegler’s gorgeous paintings, photographs and decorated gourds, Andy Trinkle’s fancy woodworking and Janet Trinkle’s pressed flower pictures, it’s hard to resist.

Above Mountain Ranch, watch Steven Hall make fine pottery from porcelain in his studio as he demonstrates wheel techniques and glazing. And just a short hop away, Black Eagle and MB Black Eagle open their amazing hand-crafted hill top home and studio filled with turquoise jewelry, leather bags, masks, reclaimed artist furniture, and cultural craft work. They’re new on the tour this year; don’t miss this opportunity to meet them.

In Sheep Ranch, Shay Baker is back again with her fanciful paintings and drawings in acrylic, pastel, and watercolor. From there, it’s a popular but twisty drive to Michael Gustavson’s ceramic studio near Murphys on Fullen Drive, where his giant sculptures punctuate incredible views of the mountains.

In Dorrington, Ann Nancy Macomber says that people say they like to start their tours at her studio, where they can see her award-winning acrylic and watercolor paintings. From there, it’s an easy drive down Highway 4 to Arnold, where Ruth Morrow, a venerable, well-known and well-loved artist holds court in her studio that’s chockablock with paintings and found-object assemblage. This year Heidi Gaissert joins the tour, displaying hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramics at her studio on Meadow View Road.

The historic Quyle Kilns will host four artists this year, and not all of them are clay workers. Victoria Fout covers canvases with thick acrylic impasto to create semi-abstract pieces that often have fairy princesses and demons on the same canvas; her miniatures of fantasy animals make terrific gifts. If realism is more your style, George Haskell’s tonalist landscapes and corgi paintings will please you. It’s reasonable to expect ceramics at Quyle Kilns, and Pamela Quyle and Amanda Sedgwick-Maule won’t disappoint with their functional pottery and sculptural pieces.

Just outside of Murphys you’ll find Susan King and Aaron Quinn on Coyote Drive. Susan’s studio will be full of her luminous watercolors and collage, and Aaron, new to the tour this year, will be showing his complex and colorful ink and watercolor drawings.

The elegance of letterpress printing is unmatched in our modern world, and Ryan Anderson aims to bring it back to Murphys in his print shop and studio off French Gulch Road. Come learn about this vintage art form and take home posters and cards that will inspire.

At Michel Olson’s studio just off Appaloosa Lane between Angels Camp and Copperopolis, there’s more to see than art, although Sharon Strong’s otherworldly masks and sculptures will anchor the site in artwork. But Olson, a skilled blacksmith who will be demonstrating his craft, has created gardens of standing stones and outdoor assemblage, plus a collection of gypsy wagons. Vicki Burnham Wilson’s kinetic and motorized art vehicles will give the site, and the tour, plenty of zoom.

Artists Studio Tour dates:  September 22 and 23, 2018 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A special preview reception with light refreshments will be at the Arts Council Gallery on Main Street in San Andreas on September 15, 3 to 5 p.m., with a general membership meeting at 4 pm.

08/11/2018 - The Dustbowl Revival Returns to Twisted Oak Winery, August 11th
Vallecito, CA...The Dustbowl Revival returns to Twisted Oak this Saturday August 11th! Don't they look like a fun bunch? Tickets: https://www.twistedoak.com/dbr — at Twisted Oak Winery...Saturday, August 11th at 7:30pm - live at Twisted Oak Winery in Vallecito! Swing. Hot jazz. Pre-war blues. Bluegrass. Southern soul. New Orleans funk. The Dustbowl Revival is what you could call an American roots orchestra with eight full-time members — and they play it all, mashing the sounds of traditional American music into a genre-hopping, time-bending dance party that coaxes new fire out of familiar coal. This isn’t a throwback band. It’s a celebration of the sounds that have kept America moving for more than a century, performed with all the flair of a medicine show and rooted in the sweat and swagger of a juke joint song swap.

The Dustbowl Revival is an Americana Soul band with eight full-time members who mash the sounds of New Orleans funk, bluegrass, soul, pre-war blues, and roots music, into a genre-hopping, time-bending dance party that coaxes new fire out of familiar coal. Dustbowl is touring behind their self-titled, fourth studio album which spent three weeks on Billboard charts, hit #1 on Amazon Americana-Alt-Country, #2 on Amazon Folk, spent 16 weeks on the Americana radio chart peaking in the Top 20, and has spent one straight year on the Folk radio chart.

The band was founded in 2008 in the bohemian enclave of Venice Beach, California. Over the last five years Dustbowl has become known for their free-flowing and joyous live shows, combining their funk rhythm and brass section with a fast-picking string band section - opening for bands as diverse as Lake Street Dive, Trombone Shorty and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, touring China as a guest of the state department and headlining festivals like Delfest, Floydfest, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and recently Bergenfest (Norway) and Tonder Festival (Denmark). The band received a big wave of attention with their music video that featured famous actor Dick Van Dyke for "Never Had to Go", which garnered over 10 million cumulative views. That video is now airing in an HBO Doc titled "If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast" starring Jerry Seinfeld, Mel Brooks, and Dick Van Dyke.

While the band has been known for their old-time and bluegrass roots, they have departed from those styles and evolved more into modern soul music. Now, with Producer Grammy Award-winning Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys) who collaborated on the recent album, Dustbowl Revival brings it on, in the good company of neo-Soul contemporaries such as Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and St. Paul & The Broken Bones. The album delivers eleven hot tracks, dominated by love-triangle funk & soul, tenderized with a nod to the unlikely possibility of true love – i.e. "Honey I Love You", with Grammy Award-winning blues artist Keb’ Mo’ sitting in.

This exhilarating new sound jumps out on the album’s opening tracks, “Call My Name” and “If You Could See Me Now.” Drummer Joshlyn Heffernan and bassist James Klopfleisch lay down a righteous groove that trumpeter Matt Rubin and trombonist Ulf Bjorlin supercharge with their big blasts of horns. This Stax-style soul builds to a pair of showstoppers: “Good Egg” and “The Story.” The former is a dynamic number that showcases Liz Beebe’s sexy, full-throttled vocals as well as Bjorlin’s dirty trombone solo. On “The Story,” Beebe teams with band founder Zach Lupetin for an emotionally charged love song that features some infectious interplay between the horn players and the string-men (mandolinist Daniel Mark and fiddler Connor Vance).

From an Outside Lands Music Festival review, Rob Sheffield, in Rolling Stone, hailed them as a great band “whose Americana swing was so fun I went back to see them again the next day.”
