12/01/2017 - Murphys Open House, December 1, 2017, 5-8 pm Presented by the Murphys Business Association
Murphys, CA...Every year on the first Friday in December, Murphys celebrates the start of the holiday season with a community Open House from 5 to 8 pm on Historic Main Street. Admission is free, the streets are closed to traffic and we are ready to celebrate the winter holidays. Chestnuts will be roasting, carolers will be singing, and Santa will be visiting! A favorite of locals, the annual event is an old-fashioned celebration featuring a parade, holiday treats and entertainment hosted by Main Street merchants, restaurants, wineries and the Murphys Business Association. Santa arrives with the parade and stays for photos with the kids in the Native Sons Hall. Bring your phone or camera to snap a picture. The New Horizon Band will be providing music in the Native Sons Hall and Road Trip Espresso will be offering hot drinks for sale nearby.

Each year the merchants, wineries and other businesses of Murphys put on this event to help all of us find our holiday spirit, let us show off our town and, most importantly, to say thank you to locals and visitors for their support throughout the year.

The parade begins promptly at 5:30 pm starting at the Historic Murphys Hotel and continues to Big Trees Road, so come early and grab a good spot.

Open House is a fun time to visit Murphys’ shops, tasting rooms and restaurants, see what’s new and visit with friends, old and new, while warming yourself around the fire-pits manned by our local Boy Scouts. It's also good time to check out some of the new businesses in town: Broll Mountain Vineyards is now down in the middle of town, Kola Farms General Store & Tasting Room is open, Gabby’s is open in the Arbors and there’s going to be lots to see. Center right off the patio with the Christmas Tree. Make sure you wander all of Main Street including our side streets and nooks and crannies just off Main Street. Take a moment to admire the town tree located on the Arbors patio and provided by Ironstone Vineyards. If you are planning on having dinner downtown you might want to make reservations early.

Free parking is available at the Masonic Hall and behind the Arbors as well as on surrounding streets but please be considerate of the residents when selecting a parking place. The Black Bart Theater parking lot will be closed for parade staging until about 6:30pm. There will be no parking on Main Street during the event.

The Calaveras Wine Alliance will be celebrating their Festival of Wines in Murphys on Friday evening and at wineries throughout the county over the weekend so plan to visit Murphys and other Calaveras County wineries for entertainment, specials and more on Saturday & Sunday. Don’t forget that you can ride the Saturday Hopper bus from Valley Springs to Murphys and points in between on Saturdays. Get all the details at facebook.com/Calaveras-Transit. Wondering what else is going on in Murphys during the holidays? Visit our online calendar at visitmurphys.com.

Donn Marinovich has a history in Tuolumne County as a General Contractor but his passion lies with the study and preservation of vintage Dodge Brothers Trucks. Marinovich is an officer of the Northern California Dodge Brothers & Sisters, a chapter of the worldwide Dodge Brothers Club that was founded in 1983 and is dedicated to the research and preservation of Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicles and Graham Brothers Commercial Vehicles 1914-1938. Donn Marinovich and his wife Sherrin are also the proud owners of a family heirloom 1923 Dodge Business/Commercial Truck that Donn personally restored between 1995 and 2000. Marinovich's talk will focus on the history of the Dodge Brothers company including some insight into the mysteries of the original company logo. He has also promised some interesting information on the Dodge Brothers/American La France Chemical Fire Truck once used by the Angels Camp Volunteer Fire Department, now preserved in the Museum’s Carriage House.

11/05/2017 - Broadway Musicals Featured in Calaveras Community Band Concert on November 5th
Angels Camp, CA...The uplifting songs from some of America’s favorite Broadway musicals will be featured when the Calaveras Community Band presents its annual Fall Concert on Sunday, November 5, 3 p.m. in the Dr. Elliot A. Smart Performing Arts Center at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. Under the direction of Mic Harper, the band will take the audience on a musical tour through the fabled theatre district with stops at “Man of La Mancha”, “Westside Story” and “Beauty and the Beast”. In the spirit of the season, the program will also include “Autumn Leaves” and “October”.

Harper and the musicians look forward to performing this light-hearted, nostalgic concert as a celebration of the band’s energy packed, successful 2017 season. “It has been a joy, as always, and an honor to play at the various venues around Calaveras County,” says Harper. “We’re looking forward to performing this concert of uplifting and thoughtful music. In many ways it is a tribute to the good people of Calaveras County.”

Everyone, young and old, is encouraged to be in attendance. There is no admission charge for the performance, but there will be an opportunity for concertgoers to make a donation to help support this unique Motherlode treasure.

Harper cautions the day of the concert will mark the end of Daylight Savings Time so people should check their clocks. “We would hate to have you miss the chance to enjoy this musical journey,” says Harper.
The Calaveras Community Band traces it history to the days following the Gold Rush. Men would brush away the grime of the mines, put on a uniform, take up their musical instruments and entertain the crowds at many public functions. Creating music brought extra meaning to their lives and provided a counterpoint to the stresses of the day.

In those times they were known as the Angels Camp Miners Band, the Murphys Independent Cornet Band, or by a dozen other names.

Today the Calaveras Community Band carries on this honored tradition. The age range has been expanded. Women are now welcomed and respected. The military uniforms have been put aside. But the spirit remains the same – people who love to play music performing for those who enjoy listening. And together they create a relaxing and enriching environment.

“We greatly appreciate the enthusiastic audiences who attended our concerts this summer in Murphys Community Park and other venues” says Harper. “The musicians had a wonderful time playing jazz, swing, and summertime favorites.

“We want to thank the Murphys Community Club for allowing us to spend our summers rehearsing and playing music in Murphys Park and the Bret Harte School District for letting us use its beautiful auditorium for our concert. We continue to look for new musicians to join us. All wind instruments and skill levels are welcome. If you have an instrument you no longer use, please donate it to the band so we can put it in the hands of student musicians who will bring it to life.”

For information, contact Mic Harper, 770-1258, or Carol Betz, 728-9057. The email addresses are micharper7@gmail.com and calaverascommunityband@gmail.com.
