Progress on Utica Hotel May Be Stalling ~ By John Hamilton

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/11/2008 01:30 PM
Angels Camp, CA....We have just learned that unfortunately, the Utica Hotel in downtown Angels Camp has fallen out of escrow and is back on the market. Due to parking concerns and costs of adding enough rooms to make it a full hotel, Rudy Ortega chose not to purchase the hotel. It appears the best course of action for the Utica Hotel in the short term would be to find a buyer who is willing to make minor renovations and use the non-hotel portion as Commercial space. This is very sad as this was a very exciting venture for downtown Angels Camp. Update...We just had the opportunity to spend a few minutes speaking with Architect Rudy Ortega on the Utica Hotel. He expressed his regrets at not being able to pull the deal together. He was excited about the project and he knew many people in the area were looking forward to...

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/10/2008 10:02 PM
Greetings from the Atlantis Reno, Nevada....How fortunate are we? Driving over Ebbetts Pass surrounded by tall pines, fragrant cedar, symmetrical blue spruce, aspen shimmering in the gentle breeze, the sun highlighting the cold water of Lake Alpine and picturesque Mosquito Lake sure put me in a relaxed state of mind. The only thing I dreaded was maneuvering the hairpin curve leaving the lake.....

Angels Camp Leading The Way...Draft Large Format AKA "Big Box" Retail Development Guidelines Have Been Released By ~ John Hamilton

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/10/2008 01:24 PM
Angels Camp, CA...The City of Angels Camp has prepared a Draft Large Format, AKA "Big Box" Retail Developement Guidelines. The planning on this document was spearheaded by Planning Commissioners Bob Middleton and Henry Petithomme. We have always thought someone like Commissioner Middleton's input would be vital. This topic has the potential to impact him personally "He and his family own Middleton's Furniture and Appliances, Middleton's Hallmark and also the Mark Twain Shopping Center." If you could get a document crafted that addressed his concerns as well as still make the area attractive for investment then as a community you should be on the right track. Interim Planning Director Bruce Baracco's office forwarded us the draft guidelines. These draft guidelines will also be the subject of discussion at next weeks Angels Camp Business Association Meeting. Let them know what you think! The Draft Guidelines are enclosed...

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/08/2008 02:01 PM
San Andreas, CA...Enclosed is well over an hour of the public comment period at today's board meeting. It was an intense, rough and bumpy ride. If you are looking for the cliff notes version this is it. CAO Lawton stated at the beginning of the meeting that there will be a closed session next week to discuss personnel issues including discipline or termination. The public comment period included many sharp exchanges as was expected. It also had a few "Only in Calaveras" lighthearted moments specifically around poultry. The Board now faces a unified cross section of the business community that would like changes to be made at the CDA.
