Welcome Readers,
There is probably no other area in the good ol’ USA that is more hospitable than the south. Everything I have ever seen, read or experienced has led me to believe that southerners with their relaxed and friendly nature, their expansive plantations, their slum neighborhoods with rundown houses, and simple lifestyles all welcome family members and friends to the comforts of home, hearth and the dinner table. The squeaky door of a screened porch, the grand entrance way to a mansion framed in Greek pillars, the lattice gate to a private garden, and the grand carved wood doors on a country church all welcome you to a gathering where fine southern cooking awaits you. The aromas of fried catfish, hushpuppies, collard greens, bar-b-cue ribs, fried chicken, corn bread, buttermilk biscuits, fried green tomatoes, coleslaw and sweet potato pie surround the guests as it drifts from the kitchen. Sipping Mint Julips, lemonade or iced tea on a summer day while sitting on the porch a spell in a rhythmic rocker whets one’s appetite and promises an unforgettable meal, whether it be served on gleaming china or a tin plate. So, in honor of Martin Luther King’s birthday I thought I would share some of my prized southern recipes so you, too, could prepare southern foods that will be the center of attention at your next get-together.....

Angels Camp, CA.... "Since Staci's surgery on December 20th, there have many setbacks and discouragements. She faces another surgery next Tuesday. Matt asks that we continue our prayers, so we are gathering together on their behalf. There are many others in our community who are suffering and we will be remembering them also. Angels Camp, CA....The Calaveras County Junior Livestock Boosters will be holding their annual dinner dance on Saturday, February 5th at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds- Angels Camp, Mark Twain Hall. No-Host cocktails will be served beginning at 6 P.M., beef-in-the-barrel dinner will be served from7-8 P.M. and dancing to the live country music of “Paul Justin & Saloonatixx”, will begin at 9 P.M....

Penny West is leaving the Calaveras County Arts Council (CCAC), a private, public benefit non-profit organization, where she has served for over two decades. She began working at the CCAC as Executive Director in 1989. During her 21-year tenure, she brought the organization, which had a zero budget then, to where it is today, a successful agency that connects the arts with local residents. Mary Jane Genochio who had been job-sharing with West for four years, and then was appointed to Executive Director a year ago, will continue at the helm. Ed Cline, volunteer President of the Board of Directors, will also continue his leadership role.....

"Growing up in a small agricultural town in San Joaquin County brings back memories that often apply to life. On the outskirts of town there were many dairy farms. When the weather gets wet, large areas of deep mud often form where cows frequent. If a cow becomes stuck in the mud, someone has to get it out. If the cow stays stuck for to long it will dehydrate/starve and did. Government, at all levels, federal, state and local are still alive, but are stuck in the mud....

Angels Camp, CA.....The ongoing issue between the Calaveras County Visitors' Bureau (CVB) and the City of Angels Camp regarding the future of the Angels Camp Visitors' Center continues to unfold. As last reported here, the Personnel and Finance Committee of the Angels Camp City Council met last week, and as part of their agenda the struggle over the future of the Visitors' Center was at issue.....
