Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Visitors Bureau (CVB) recently announced that it will provide $2,000 in scholarships this year to area high school students as part of its new Travel Writing Scholarship program. Aimed at encouraging interest in tourism marketing, the first-ever CVB Travel Writing Scholarship, challenges local students to create a 400-750 word blog post, with photos, to entice visitors to the area. Seniors from Bret Harte and Calaveras High Schools, who best highlight area recreation, adventure, activities, places, events and/or area history and demonstrate an excellence in writing, will be selected to receive one of four The Calaveras Visitors Bureau (CVB) recently announced that it will provide $2,000 in scholarships this year to area high school students as part of its new Travel Writing Scholarship program....

Altaville, CA...Helen Hilda (Crosby) (Korbelik) Preston. Helen Preston of Altaville passed away on the 27th of January in San Andreas after a short illness. Helen was born the fourth child on April 30, 1921 in Altaville to Burgess S. and Nora (Domingo) Crosby. She attended Altaville Grammar School and Bret Harte High School. She loved baseball, swimming and was quite an athlete growing up, even catching her Brother Raymond a left-handed pitcher of note. The greatest joys in her life were her children Gary, Darla, Linda, Mike and Nora; whom she taught to be self sufficient and fearless, her trademarks, even down to the Grandchildren that trait appears throughout. A homemaker by trade, her food was the stuff legends are built upon. She was always honest, sometimes to a fault. A tireless worker, she passed those values to her children and all that knew her. Her strength will not be lost or forgotten by those who know and love her...

As part of the leadership team, Junior Fair Board members work in all areas of the Jubilee including the internationally known Frog Jump. In order to participate in the Junior Fair Board, young people must be a junior or senior and attend a Calaveras County High School. Underclassmen who have served in the past may apply. Well rounded students with a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average are encouraged to apply. An appreciation for the community and a passion for the event are a plus. Applicants must attend one pre-fair meeting and commit to working 2 days during the Calaveras County Fair....

Angels Camp, CA...Walt Markus and his team at Gateway Press in Murphys were the winners of the "Business of the Year" award at tonight's Annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner. For 28 years they have been providing a wide range if business graphics and printed products. This a well deserved honor for this well run and fixture of the community. State Senator Tom Berryhill was on hand to present the honor. 2012 was a great year for the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and tonight was their 89th Annual Dinner where the new officers, directors, and business of the year are announced....
