World Press Freedom Index 2014...The Biggest Rises & Falls Press Freedom..US Down To 46th |

Paris, France...The 2014 World Press Freedom Index spotlights the negative impact of conflicts on freedom of information and its protagonists. The ranking of some countries has also been affected by a tendency to interpret national security needs in an overly broad and abusive manner to the detriment of the right to inform and be informed. This trend constitutes a growing threat worldwide and is even endangering freedom of information in countries regarded as democracies. Finland tops the index for the fourth year running, closely followed by Netherlands and Norway, like last year. At the other end of the index, the last three positions are again held by Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea, three countries where freedom of information is non-existent. Despite occasional turbulence in the past year, these countries continue to be news and information black holes and living hells for the journalists who inhabit them. This year’s index covers 180 countries, one more than last year. The new entry, Belize, has been assigned an enviable position (29th). Cases of violence against journalists are rare in Belize but there were some problems: defamation suits involving demands for large amounts in damages, national security restrictions on implementation of the Freedom of Information Act and sometimes unfair management of broadcast frequencies.

Stanislaus National Forest Solicits Public Input On OHV Program |

Sonora, CA…The Stanislaus National Forest (NF) is soliciting public input on the preliminary 2015 off-highway vehicle (OHV) proposal, a key funding component for off-highway trail and facility forest maintenance, from March 4 to April 7. The California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHVMR) Division grant will support: facility operations and maintenance (e.g., Hull Creek Campground, Crandall OHV, Niagara OHV); trail repair and maintenance; installation of directional and educational trail signing; barrier placement; routine law enforcement patrols; and visitor education.

Murphys, CA....We are now entering the core of our local election season. As an example was the festive and elegant affair to kick off the election campaign for Judge Hugh Swift. The recently seated jurist now has to roll up his robe sleeves and earn the votes from our local voters to continue his service to the area. Governor Brown led with his vote of confidence when he appointed Judge Swift. Many in the community stopped by to show their support and volunteer to work on his campaign and contribute...

Washington, DC...Today, continuing to fulfill his promise to make 2014 a year of action, the President will sign an Executive Order to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 for federal contract workers. The Executive Order the President will sign today will benefit hundreds of thousands of people working under contracts with the federal government who are making less than $10.10 an hour. It will also improve the value that taxpayers are getting from the federal government’s investment. Studies show that boosting low wages will reduce turnover and absenteeism, while also boosting morale and improving the incentives for workers, leading to higher productivity overall. These gains improve the quality and efficiency of services provided to the government....

| SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments. Nancy Ward, 58, of Sacramento, has been appointed chief deputy director at the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Ward has served in multiple positions for Region IX of the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency since 2000, including regional administrator and director of the Response and Recovery Division. Ward was chief of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Disaster Assistance Division from 1993 to 2000 and a staff services manager at the California Department of Social Services from 1989 to 1993. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $165,000. Ward is registered without party preference.... |

CAL FIRE Increases Firefighter Staffing in Central Valley & Sierra |

Sacramento, CA...Despite recent rain, California has not received enough rainfall to make up for this winter’s dry weather pattern and the third dry year in a row. As a result, continued drought conditions and wildfires have required CAL FIRE to hire several dozen seasonal firefighters earlier than normal across the Central Valley and Central Sierra. “The recent rainfall is not enough for us to let our guard down,” said Chief Dale Hutchinson, CAL FIRE Southern Region Chief. “Though the rain is great in the short term, even if it rained straight for several months, we wouldn’t catch up to the amount of rainfall we need.” The additional seasonal firefighter hiring includes 15 firefighters in CAL FIRE's Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit, 14 in the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, and 12 in the Fresno-Kings Unit. The additional firefighters come just one week after nearly two dozen seasonal firefighters were hired in Tulare County....

Open House Slated for Updates on Rim Fire Recovery Project |

Sonora, CA…The Stanislaus National Forest will host an open house on Thursday, February 13 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Stanislaus National Forest’s Conference Room at 19777 Greenley Road, Sonora (across the street from the Tuolumne County Library). “We want to continue to provide information to the public regarding the progress on the proposed Rim Fire Recovery Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This will be another great opportunity for the public to see what the Forest is proposing during this initial phase of recovery within the burn,” Maria Benech, Rim Fire Recovery EIS ID Team Leader said. Several dozen members of the local community attended three previous Open Houses held in December which provided an overview of the initial proposed actions and poster presentations by various resource experts. This Open House is intended to share information regarding new alternatives developed based on public involvement and collaborative efforts....

Rim Fire Burn Area Responding Well to Recent Rains |

Sonora, CA...Since October 1, rainfall ranging from approx. six to 12 inches has fallen across the Rim Fire burn area, with close to half this amount falling in the last five days. Near Groveland, almost three inches of rain fell in the last five days, while Mt. Elizabeth, near Twain Harte received almost seven inches in the same period, sparking fears of storm damage in the Rim Fire burn area....
