Census Bureau Projects U.S. and World Populations on New Year’s Day

Washington, DC...As our nation prepares to ring in the new year, the U.S. Census Bureau projects the U.S. population will be 326,971,407 on Jan. 1, 2018. This represents an increase of 2,314,238, or 0.71 percent, from New Year’s Day 2017. Since Census Day (April 1) 2010, the population has grown by 18,225,587, or 5.90 percent.

Los Angeles, CA...(AP) California’s legal pot market opens for business on Jan. 1. The day will be a milestone, but what exactly will happen then and, especially, in the weeks and months to come is unclear. Lori Ajax, the state’s top pot regulator, has been at the center of the effort to establish rules for a legal pot economy valued at $7 billion. Here are her thoughts on what to expect:
Sacramento, CA...Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has granted 132 pardons and 19 commutations. Individuals who have been convicted of a crime in California may apply to the Governor for a pardon. Those granted pardons all completed their sentences and the majority were convicted of drug-related or other nonviolent crimes. Pardons are not granted unless they are earned.
Colorado Springs, CO...NORAD started the tradition after a local store’s advertisement for kids to call Santa on a special “hotline” included a misprinted telephone number. Instead of reaching Mr. Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations “hotline.” The Director of Operations, Colonel Harry Shoup, received the first “Santa” call and had his staff check radar data to see if there was any indication of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Indeed, there were signs of Santa, and children who called in were given an update on Santa’s position. Thus, the tradition was born.
