Sacramento, CA...California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today announced the filing of a lawsuit against Sutter Health, the largest hospital system in Northern California, for anticompetitive practices that result in higher healthcare costs for Northern Californians. The action aims to stop Sutter Health from unlawful conduct under state antitrust laws and restore competition in the California healthcare market.
Governor Brown Grants 56 Pardons & 14 Commutations, Including 5 Immigrants

Sacramento, CA...Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has granted 56 pardons and 14 commutations. Individuals who have been convicted of a crime in California may apply to the Governor for a pardon. Those granted pardons all completed their sentences years ago and the majority were convicted of drug-related or other nonviolent crimes. Pardons are not granted unless they are earned.
U.S. Census Bureau Delivers Planned 2020 Census Questions to Congress

Washington, DC...Today the U.S. Census Bureau delivered its planned questions for the 2020 Census to Congress, which include age, sex, Hispanic origin, race, relationship, homeownership status, and citizenship status. By law, the Census Bureau must deliver decennial census questions to Congress two years before Census Day, with the next one occurring April 1, 2020.

Calaveras River Mitigation Project Will Reduce Flood Risk After Fire

Oakland, Calif. – Calaveras County will reduce flood risk in the Calaveras River watershed by minimizing water runoff, soil erosion, sediment accumulation, and debris flow through a $3.9 million mitigation project. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded $2,974,335 to the County for erosion control measures including hydro-mulching and hydro-seeding in the most vulnerable watersheds following the 2015 Butte Fires. The State of California will fund the remaining $991,445 for the project.
CCWD Notifying Customers of Proposed Water, Sewer Rate Increases

San Andreas, CA...After more than a year of in-depth analysis and discussion, the Calaveras County Water District Board of Directors instructed staff to send written notifications to customers regarding proposed changes to rates for the District’s 13,000 water customers and 5,000 sewer customers (click here to read the notice). These notices are required by Proposition 2018 (Prop. 218), which is a constitutional amendment passed in 1996 that ensures public agencies notify customers before rates or fees are changed. Prop. 218 also requires a 45-day period between the mailing of the notices and the date of a final public hearing, at which time the new water and sewer rates will be voted on by CCWD Board members. CCWD’s public rate hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 23, 2018, at the District’s headquarters at 120 Toma Court, San Andreas. All information regarding the proposed rate changes will be posted to www.ccwd.org/rates.

Sacramento, CA...California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will hold a press conference tomorrow at 11:00 am PT/2:00 pm ET to announce a lawsuit over the Trump Administration’s unconstitutional decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census questionnaire. Hours ago, the U.S. Census Bureau announced the addition, incorrectly contending that the addition would “help enforce the Voting Rights Act.”
