Nearly $3.4 Billion in Transportation Projects to Be Accelerated

Sacramento, CA...Caltrans added nearly 1,200 lane miles of pavement repair and 66 bridges to its growing list of projects to be delivered sooner than planned thanks to the imminent influx of revenue from the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 (SB 1), the transportation funding and reform package passed in April. To date, Caltrans has now expedited nearly $5 billion in “fix-it-first” projects since the spring.

Becerra Announces $120M Multistate Settlement With General Motors Over Defective Ignition Switch

Sacramento, CA...California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today announced a $120 million multistate settlement with General Motors Company (GM) over allegations that the company concealed safety issues related to defective ignition switches in GM vehicles. California will be receiving over $7 million. The settlement, reached among the attorneys general of 49 states and the District of Columbia and GM, concludes a multistate investigation into the auto manufacturer’s failure to disclose in a timely manner known safety defects associated with unintended key-rotation and/or ignition-switch related issues in several models and model years of GM vehicles.

Jobless Claims Lowest Since March 31, 1973

Washington, DC...In the week ending October 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 222,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's revised level. This is the lowest level for initial claims since March 31, 1973 when it was 222,000. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 243,000 to 244,000. The 4-week moving average was 248,250, a decrease of 9,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 257,500 to 257,750. Claims taking procedures continue to be severely disrupted in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as a result of power outages and infrastructure damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Commission on Aging Recognizes 2017 Senior Volunteers

San Andreas, CA...On October 11, 2017, the Calaveras County Commission on Aging celebrated the annual selection of the Senior Volunteer of the Year with four top awards on behalf of the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors. Lifetime of the Year award was presented to King McPherson of Murphys, Senior Volunteer Man of the Year was Al Duncan of Valley Springs (picture attached), Senior Volunteer Woman of the Year was Sue Friedman of Murphys (picture attached) and Senior Team Volunteers were Becky and Tom Hall of Mountain Ranch. Each of the winners were nominated by another community member, who had glowing reports of the countless hours each nominee had contributed in a volunteer capacity, working unpaid under all kinds of obstacles and schedules. Two County Supervisors, Gary Tofenelli, District 1 and Mike Oliveira, District 3 were present at the luncheon to award the Certificates of Appreciation to the honorees.

Supervisors Meeting on Cannabis Ban or Heavy Regulation Continues Tomorrow

San Andreas, CA...No decision yet and after an all day meeting to get through the public comments the board meeting will resume tomorrow morning at 9am. It was at times an entertaining reality show today with some tempers, quite a bit of erudite, well reasoned comment on both sides. Unfortunately there was also a bit of drama from the gallery and even from a couple of the board members before today's session ended. The Calaveras Cannabis show continues on tomorrow...
