Yosemite, CA...Yosemite National Park is proud to announce that Thomas (Tom) Karl Standen III is the recipient of the 2018 Barry Hance Memorial Award. This ceremony was attended by approximately 400 Yosemite National Park employees, retirees, volunteers, and park partners including several past Barry Hance Memorial Award recipients.

Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens April 20, 1920 – July 16, 2019

Washington, DC...The Statement from the Supreme Court...Retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, John Paul Stevens, died this evening at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, of complications following a stroke he suffered on July 15. He passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side. He was 99 years old. Justice Stevens was appointed to the Court by President Ford in 1975, and retired in 2010, after serving more than 34 years on the Court. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Jane Sesemann (Craig) and Susan Roberta Mullen (Kevin), nine grandchildren: Kathryn, Christine, Edward, Susan, Lauren, John, Madison, Hannah, Haley, and 13 great grandchildren. His first wife Elizabeth Jane, his second wife, Maryan Mulholland, his son, John Joseph, and his daughter, Kathryn, preceded him in death.
Governor Newsom Announces Regional Leaders & Statewide Experts who will Advise on Solutions to Combat Homelessness

Sacramento, CA... Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the names of the regional leaders and statewide experts who will advise the Administration on solutions to address the state’s homelessness epidemic. Once convened, these leaders will join Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas in meetings across the state to assist local governments in crafting their regional strategies to address homelessness, with a particular focus on homelessness prevention and early intervention. Recent homeless data shows the cost crisis is a major driver of homelessness as many Californians struggle to afford rent. As the state invests historic amounts of money in homelessness, including for shelters and mental health services, there remains a great need to slow or stop the in-flow of people becoming homeless in the first place.

"Mr. Speaker: We have unfortunately entered a period of our history when our political rhetoric has become hyperbolic, while our political views are becoming increasingly irreconcilable. We would all be well advised not to continue down this path. “America, love it or leave it” is not a new sentiment or a radical sentiment and it is certainly not a racist sentiment. It should remind us of commonly held and enduring founding principles that ought to unite us as Americans: respect for the rule of law, and the uniquely American principles of individual liberty, constitutionally limited government and personal responsibility that have produced the happiest, most productive and most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Milwaukee, WI....Derco Aerospace...Thank you very much. Thank you very much. We’ve had an exciting time. It’s been incredible. And, as you know, we just hit the highest we’ve ever hit on the Dow. The stock market is the best it’s ever been. Jobs are the best they’ve ever been. A couple of other little factors, not so bad. We’re doing great and we have a great military, and I thank you for that.

Washington, DC...I want welcome everyone to the White House. We are very excited to be hosting our third annual Made in America Showcase. It’s all about “Made in America.” (Applause.) We just started this, and this is my third already. And I just went around and saw these incredible companies that make everything from the THAAD missiles to beautiful boats. And I said, “How would that boat do against the THAAD missile?” And it wasn’t a good answer. (Laughter.) The boat is going to have a little problem, but that’s okay.
Stanislaus National Forest Extends High-Country Road Closure to July 31 Snow Continues to Melt but Some Roads Remain Inaccessible

Sonora, CA...Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor Jason Kuiken signed forest order STF-16-2019-11, amending the forest areas closed due to the significant amount of snow that fell last winter. The new closure order is extended to July 31, 2019, or until conditions allow the roads to reopen.
Fuels Reduction Project Underway Near Mill Woods & Including Portions of The Arnold Rim Trail

Arnold, CA...CAL FIRE awarded Calaveras County Resource Conservation District (CCRCD) a grant funded by California Climate Investments (CCI) dollars to reduce a dangerous fuel load on 30 acres of undeveloped common property located in the Mill Woods subdivision of Arnold. The goal of the project is to decrease the fuel load and create a fuel break protecting the Mill Woods subdivision as well as central Arnold and other neighboring communities. The cleared area will reduce the risk of fire ignition, slow its potential spread, and provide the first responders with the critical extra time to achieve control of the fire situation.
