"Californians questioning why their state budget is in perpetual red ink need look no further than the California Public Employees' Retirement System's (CalPERS) implicit forecast in 1999 that the Dow Jones Industrial Average would reach 25,000 by 2009, 595,000 by 2049 and 28 million by 2099 and that its investment earnings would rise alongside. Based on that projection of robust investment earnings, the 1999 Legislature and governor massively boosted lifetime pensions for government employees without requiring increased pension contributions.....

BLS NEWS RELEASE: Women’s Earnings in California – 2008

In 2008, women who were full-time wage and salary workers in California had median weekly earnings of $738, or about 87 percent of the $852 median for their male counterparts, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Richard J. Holden noted the ratio reported in California has decreased from a high of just over 90 percent in 2005. Nationwide, women earned $638, or approximately 80 percent of the $798 median for men in 2008. At the national level, the ratio of women’s to men’s earnings has narrowed from 62 percent in 1979, the first year for which comparable .....

DMV ANNOUNCES ONLINE OPTION FOR MOTORISTS TO REINSTATE VEHICLE REGISTRATION

Sacramento -- With the addition of two new Internet services launched this past month, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) now offers 15 online applications at www.dmv.ca.gov that allow customers to do business with the department at their convenience. The two newest offerings will assist motorists needing to show DMV proof a vehicle is insured. “Since 2004, the DMV has increased the number of online services for customers fivefold,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “These new options reduce the time for a vehicle owner to get back on the road after providing proof of insurance.”....

Board of Equalization Launches Online Appointment System Online Appointments Can Be Made for Taxpayer Assistance at Field Offices

Bill Leonard, Member of the State Board of Equalization (BOE), today announced that taxpayers statewide can now make appointments for BOE office visits through an online system. Earlier this year, the BOE implemented an online appointment pilot program to allow taxpayers to make appointments to come into BOE district offices to meet with BOE staff. The successful pilot program has been expanded to offer the online appointment system, available at www.boe.ca.gov, to schedule office visits at 20 BOE field offices locations throughout the state.....

As the Legislature contemplates another challenging fiscal deficit in this year’s and next year’s budget, the Legislature is debating whether or not to accept money from the federal government. This summer, President Obama and US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan introduced a new education grant program called “Race to the Top.” The grant consists of 4.35 billion dollars that all states can apply and compete for if they meet certain requirements laid out by administration officials.....

Sacramento – Today, the California Transportation Commission (CTC) allocated $125 million to 36 transportation projects to improve the state’s transportation infrastructure and bolster the economy. The allocations include $37 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) and $31 million from Proposition 1B, the $19.9 billion transportation bond approved by voters in 2006. The remaining $57 million in allocations came from assorted transportation accounts funded by state and federal dollars.....
