Report on Driveway Slope issue for Calaveras County~From Doug Shinn & Barry Ward

San Andreas, CA...After a round of public meetings, including a study session with the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, and much public dialogue we can report the following to you. We confirmed that the Building Department changed the way they “interpret” our current Fire and Life Safety Code mid year 2007. They were strongly challenged for taking this new position and we did have some limited success in softening the impact. Where the mitigation since 1992 was to pave the driveway, that is no longer the rule of the land....

Sheriff's Deputy Arrests Juveniles for String of Burglaries

Dorrington, CA....On Monday evening, March 31, 2008, The Calaveras County Sheriffs Offce arrested 2 juveniles for burglary and possession of stolen property in the Dorrington area. Deputies believe the pair who are brothers, are responsible for an estimated 16 residential burglaries in the area. Sheriffs Deputy Chris Dorsey was conducting extra patrol in the area of Chum ash Circle in response to a recent rash of burglaries in the area. Angels Camp, CA...We had the pleasure to chat for a few minutes with The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce's Executive Director, Diane Gray. One of the big pushes for the Chamber this year will be Economic Development and bringing additional jobs to the county. The Chamber is meeting with Calaveras County Board of Supervisors Chair, Steve Wilensky next week. A Supervisor's Study Session will be held at a later date on Economic Development. This will enable what everyone can do to enhance the economic vitality of our area....

Angels Camp, CA...We had the pleasure to talk for a few minutes with Ray Waller, the former head Calaveras County Building official on the ongoing driveway slope controversy. For those of you who may not remember the county stopped issuing permits for development on parcels where the driveway slope exceeds 16%. This has numerous parcels currently tied up in protraced if not uncloseable escrows and has thrown the value of hundreds of millions of dollars of county real estate and homes into question. We wanted to talk with Ray about this issue because he was with the county and the building department when the original county ordinance was created to comply with state code 4290...

Mokelumne Hill, CA...We were passed along some news that cuts are ahead for local Ambulance service from American Legion due to hard economic times. The Mokelumne Hill Unit will be phased out completely and the hours of an additional Unit will be curtailed. The call volumes have been lower than expected so they feel cuts are necessary...
