11/14/2017 - Trip Through High Sierra Among SMUG’S November 14 Highlights
Arnold, CA...A trip through High Sierra, with stops at other Apple points of interest, will be the main topic at the Tuesday, November 14 meeting of the Sierra Macintosh Users Group (SMUG). The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the assembly room of the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, 1037 Blagen Rd., Arnold, just off Highway 4. This exploration was originally set for the October meeting but had to be delayed.

Seth Summersett, a professional computer programmer and one of SMUG’s major presenters, will lead the excursion. High Sierra is the recently released macOS operating system. Apple has also introduced new versions of the iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV. Along with exploring the features of each of these innovations, Summerset will give guidance on when or why users should upgrade.

A SMUG tradition, questions about any Apple product or application will be welcomed and encouraged.

SMUG meetings are designed for dues paying members but anyone is welcome to attend to see if they would like to join the group. SMUG was founded in 1995 and is a non-profit organization run completely by volunteers. It meets the second Tuesday of the month, January through November. Annual dues are $20 for an individual or couple payable at the first of the year. Members joining mid year need only pay $10 for 2017.

The organization exists to keep Apple users abreast of the latest developments and to address the nagging questions that arise from time to time. Its goal is to take the mystery out of computers and to enable members to take advantage of all the features their Mac products possess.

For more information visit the SMUG website at or call 795-3798 or 728-9012.

Jake Edmondson is a playwright, videographer, and actor.

You may remember him from the cast of The Elephant Manback in February.
Canary Cottage is his second play about an old downtown Victorian that is currently, a rundown, board-and-care facility for the elderly. When an 88-year old Miss April goes missing but is later found at the bus station, everybody breathes a sigh of relief… except Miss April.

Linda Scheller is the author of Fierce Light (FutureCyclePress) in which the voices of 36 great women from world history and culture are imagined through poetry. Her writing has been widely published in journals and anthologies. Now retired from teaching, Ms. Scheller leads writing workshops, volunteers with a Modesto community radio station, and often plays as an actor.

In the year 1823 in Canterbury Village, Nathaniel and his new wife Dorothy give his daughter Sarah to the Shaker community to care for her and teach her the Shaker faith and way of life. When a young man joins their community, convictions are tested.

An Oregon Book Award Nominee, Nick Zagone grew up in Portland, OR. Recently his short film “The Gas Station” was on the 2017 short list for best short film at the Cannes Film Festival. And his adaptation of “Treasure Island” was commissioned and produced at Merced College in California. He is resident playwright at Prospect Theatre Project in Modesto.

In Detour: Roberts is living the life of a dead man. Literally. It’s 1945 and in a moment of bad luck on a road trip through Arizona, Roberts finds himself a new life as a new man. Detour is now a “theatre noir” where the dreams are big, but the realities are darker.

Jack Shamoken , a California native living in Chicago, started writing sketch comedy in his teens which parlayed into a life-long devotion to theatre. Screenwriting for independent film has taken him to Vienna and Los Angeles. As an author, under a pseudonym, he’s written books of fiction & poetry The Global Blimp is a play set in the writer’s room of a weekly grocery store aisle tabloid who has covered twenty-five years worth of stories about UFOs, to Big Foot, ghost-of-Elvis sightings to the Loch Ness Monster. But the paper has just lost its celebrity columnist & all its advertisers.

This MCT weekend event welcomes artists seasoned and new for audiences to experience readings & development labs from emerging & seasoned playwrights. November 3-5 : Friday and Saturday at 7PM, Sunday at 2PM. Tickets: $5. All Weekend Pass: $10

The Milliers
Milliaire Winery is a small family-owned winery founded by Liz and Steve Millier in 1983 in the cellar of their former home in Murphys CA. In 1990, the winery moved to an old Flying A gas station on Main Street in Murphys. The whole building was utilized for daily operations; barrels stacked in the repair bays, wine tanks in the backyard, bottling in the front yard and the tasting room in the office. There were jokes about what was in "those tanks" and a friend of the Milliers' dubbed it the "Roadside Chateau". Following their dreams of making premium wines from the Sierra Foothills, today Milliaire Winery has expanded and occupies over an 8,000 square foot winery with a dedicated barrel room and modern crush pad facility. The Milliaire Winery tasting room still resides in the old "Roadside Chateau" at 276 Main Street. Learn more about how Liz and Steve met!

The Winemaker
In 1975, Steve got his first winemaking job at David Bruce Winery in Santa Cruz after graduating from Fresno State with a degree in enology with an emphasis in viticulture. He knows the science and art of winemaking and grape growing from the ground up. After over 40 harvests, Steve is still exploring, learning and, most importantly, having fun in the winery. He is part alchemist, part artist and part farmer. The rest of us are fortunate to enjoy both his company and the fruit of his life's work - great bottles of wine! Read more about Steve's long winemaking career.

Char Vine sustained a spinal cord injury in 2000 from a snowboarding accident in Bear Valley that left her paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. Over the last six years, she has been hospitalized over a dozen times from complications that ensued from hardware that was installed incorrectly in her back. By 2016 her body had become deformed and her spine had degenerated so severely that some of the hardware pulled out of the bone and started causing great damage inside her body. It left her bed bound and helpless for months. She opted for a high risk, extremely complicated surgery to rebuild her spine at the end of December 2016 to try and get some quality of life back. It was a great success but the surgery also left her with less mobility than she previously had in regards to twisting and bending that she can never regain. Now, because of the long length of the fusion, it is detrimental to her body to take her wheelchair apart to put it in her car like she used to. The last several months she has been relying on daily outside help to get to appointments and to run errands. A vehicle with a dropped floor and ramp is her need to help her get from place to place independently and move more efficiently. These converted vehicles are quite expensive on top of her out-of-pocket monthly rehabilitation and therapy expenses. She is reaching further into the community for help with raising some of the money to get her through this life challenge and to help her keep moving Straight Up. Her goal is to raise $45,000 to fund a used Honda Element with a WAV Conversion that will last her the next 10-15 years. Thank you!
