The Salvation Army and Their Red Kettles Are Helping Here At Home

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/15/2013 09:05 AM
San Andreas, CA...You see them every year at this time – the bright red kettles of the Salvation Army – often accompanied by a volunteer ringing a bell. You see them in most cities and counties, including in our own Calaveras County. But many residents are unaware there is a Salvation Army Service Extension Unit right here in San Andreas. The Calaveras County Service Extension Unit of the Salvation Army is made up of a 10-person board of volunteers plus a field representative advisor from the Salvation Army. Because we are not large enough to have a Salvation Army Corps Center, we are invisible and most residents do not know we offer assistance year-round to those in need....

Columbia College Symphony of the Sierra Conert Dec. 14

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 12/14/2013 11:11 AM
Columbia, CA...Columbia College’s Symphony of the Sierra boasts several new faces amidst the familiar ones, and conductor, Mic Harper, feels confident about the upcoming free concert in Dogwood at Columbia College, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 14th. “This season has held many pleasant surprises for me,” reports Harper, “and, the best of these has been the ongoing musical growth of the orchestra in combination with the influx of new musicians.” The startling thing has been how young these new members are. They range in age from eight to fifteen. “Bringing together any group of people to perform, while exciting, can be a daunting prospect,” says Harper, “but daring to mix such wide range of ages and skills is to jump off a musical cliff. The patience and skills of our older members has made all the difference. Thanks to the willingness and hard work of all concerned it has come to be more like flying than crashing.”

LAS POSADAS NATIVITY PROCESSION - rescheduled to Sunday, December 15, 5:30 p.m.

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 12/13/2013 09:18 AM
Columbia, CA.... Las Posadas is a Spanish tradition that re-enacts the biblical story of Mary and Joseph's search for shelter in Bethlehem on the original Christmas Eve. Since 1983 the people of Columbia have put on their own version of Las Posadas each December--with a distinctive 1850s flavor. This year it's the 31st annual! Columbia State Historic Park is decorated for the Christmas season with traditional Christmas boughs and wreaths, and the ambiance is enhanced with luminaries on Main Street, lighting the way for the evening procession. The Mirth & Glee Carolers, in period costume, provide music for the event, and on-lookers participate also in this touching Columbia Christmas tradition--singing Christmas carols by candlelight..
