Tragic Motorcyle Accident Ends in Fatality of LaGrange Man

Sonora, CA....This is a follow up to the solo motorcycle fatality we reported on March 27th, 2009.....On Friday March 27th, 2009, a 60 year old LaGrange man perished on scene of a solo motorcycle accident at Banderilla Drive north of Carizzo Way in the Don Pedro Area. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family.....

Twain Harte, CA...SPI's press release on March 23rd announced plans to close two major sawmills -- one in Sonora and one at Camino. That is clearly a tragic loss for the millworkers and other workers who are tied to the seasonal employment of logging in our local area. Columbia College Summer Registration Starts April 6

If you’re thinking about summer activities, be sure to include some Columbia College classes in your plans. There will be three sessions offered by the college this summer. Session 1 runs from May 11 to June 11, session 2 from June 15 to July 16, and session 3 from July 20 to August 15. Registration for the first session starts on April 6, but students can also enroll at that time for classes in any or all sessions. The basic enrollment fee is $20 per unit, in addition to other standard student fees....

Tuolumne County, CA...Embers from a debris burn carried by wind then igniting a vacant house at 13376 Red Hills Road in Chinese Camp was the cause of a structure fire on Saturday March 21st. No injuries reported and no dollar damage available at time of this report. CAL Fire Report enclosed.....

Sierra Pacific Industries Announces Mill Closures at Sonora and Camino, California...310 Jobs to be lost!

Anderson, CA – Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) today announced it will close two sawmills located in Sonora and Camino, California this summer. In addition, a biomass-fueled electric power plant in Sonora supplying renewable energy will also be closed. According to SPI, the difficult lumber market combined with reduced timber harvests on nearby national forest lands and state regulatory burdens were the primary drivers behind the decision to close the plants. In total, 310 workers (164 at Camino, 146 at Sonora) will be affected by these closures...

Jamestown, CA....On Saturday and Sunday, April 4th-5th, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown will begin the first weekend of steam train operations for 2009. The ceremonies begin with a marching band and a raising of the flag at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday.
