Grand Theft and Conspiracy Arrest in Sonora

Sonora, CA...On November 20th, just after 8:00 A.M., Sonora Police Officers responded to Safeway (1291 Sanguinetti Road) for a report of a theft in progress. While en route, officers were advised two African American male adults exited the store with bags of stolen merchandise and got into a dark colored sedan, possibly a Toyota. Chief VanderWiel spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling westbound on Highway 108. Chief VanderWiel conducted a traffic stopped and detained the occupants, who also matched descriptions given to officers.

Sonora Traffic Details for the 34th Annual Christmas Parade on November 24th

Sonora, CA...Friday, 24 November 2017, will be the 34th annual Christmas Parade. This event will bring thousands of visitors to downtown Sonora. Several streets will be closed before and during the parade including parts of State Route 49. People need to plan ahead if they are attending the parade or trying to get through town during the parade. Detours will be posted for those streets which will be closed. The following are the major street and highway closures before and during the parade;
• South Washington Street at State Route 108 will be closed at Hospital Road at 5:30 PM.
• North and South Washington Street (State Route 49) will be closed at 5:30 PM.
• Stockton Road (State Route 49) at Green Street will be closed at 5:30 PM.
• Snell Street at Bonanza Street will be closed at 5:30 PM.
• School Street between Washington Street (State Route 49) and Snell Street will be closed at 3:30 PM.
• Restano Way will be closed at 5:30 PM.

Sonora Pass Closed For Winter... Ebbetts Pass Closed but May Reopen!

Alpine, Tuolumne, Mono and Inyo Counties – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the seasonal closure of Sonora Pass (SR-108) due to accumulations of snow and ice on this route.

Copperopolis Man Arrested on Numerous Charges at Black Oak Casino

Tuolumne, CA...A Copperopolis man took a rather large gamble last night at a local casino that didn’t pay off in his favor. Our office received a call from Black Oak Casino reporting security staff had made contact with 21-year-old Tommy High on the gaming floor after he was involved in a verbal altercation with another patron. High had multiple warrants for his arrest.

Stanislaus National Forest Ends Temporary Fire Restrictions in High Hazard Areas

Sonora, CA... The fire restrictions in high hazard areas have been terminated as of Nov. 20, 2017. The Stanislaus National Forest enacted the temporary fire restrictions on July 20. A campfire permit is still required for those camping outside of developed campgrounds and can be obtained at visitor centers or online at www.PreventWildfireCA.org.

Minor Injuries in DUI Collision on Hwy 49

Sonora, CA...On November 18, 2017 at approximately 2352 hours, Michael A. Newton of Twain Harte was driving a black 2009 Ford Crown Victoria northbound on State Route 49 south of Jack Page Road. Theodore J. Phelan of Sonora was driving a white 1992 Jeep Cherokee southbound on State Route 49 approaching Jack Page Road. Due to his high level of alcohol intoxication, Mr. Phelan crossed the double yellow lines and drove wrong-way into the northbound lane. Mr. Newton noticed the Jeep crossing into his lane so he slowed and moved his vehicle to the right shoulder. The Jeep continued across the northbound lane and collided with the Ford on the east shoulder of State Route 49 just south of Jack Page Road.
