Joseph Warren Barry, 24 From San Jose Lost His Life In Fiery Collision On Hwy 108 (Updated)

Sonora, CA...On May 29, 2017 at approximately 11:55 pm, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Joseph Warren Barry, 24 From San Jose, eastbound on State Route 108, east of Argyle Road, at an unknown speed. For unknown reasons, the driver allowed the vehicle to drift onto the right shoulder. The Silverado struck a fiberglass reflective marker, several tree branches and finally a large oak tree. A fire started within the vehicle, subsequently fully engulfing the Silverado in flames. The driver, solo occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

40 Acre Prescribed Burn Underway

Mi Wuk Village, CA...The Mi-Wok District will be attempting to accomplish a 40-acre prescribed burn on Tuesday, May 30. This understory burn is a continuation of the South 108 Fuels Reduction project. Smoke may be visible from the surrounding communities of Mi Wuk Village, Sierra Village, Long Barn and Cold Springs, as well as from Highway 108. Please do not report this as a wildfire.

Napping At The Wheel Cause Of Head On Collision in Jamestown

Jamestown – On May 25, 2017 at approximately 2:50 pm, 22 year old Jamestown resident, Vanessa Muniz, was driving a 2006 Pontiac Vive, stopped southbound on State Route 49/108, in the left turn lane to Main Street, yielding to oncoming traffic. At this time, 53 year old Jamestown resident, Richard Bennett, was driving a 1998 Honda Civic, traveling northbound on State Route 49/108, approaching Main Street, while fatigued. Bennet fell asleep at the wheel of the Honda an allowed his vehicle to travel over the solid double yellow lines, into the front end of Muniz’ vehicle.

Moderate Injuries in Collision on Hwy 108 in Twain Harte Area

Twain Harte, CA...On May 25, 2017 at approximately 2:35 pm, 24 year old Sonora resident, Kimberly Catherine Byrdharl, was driving a 1991 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Twain Harte Drive, east of High Road. At this time, 44 year old Bakersfield resident, Brandon Keith Rolin, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on Twain Harte Drive, approaching High Road. Rolin looked down and to the right within his vehicle because something fell off from the center console. Because of this distraction, Rolin allowed his vehicle to drift over the solid double yellow lines through a right hand curve in the roadway, directly into the path of Byrdharl. Subsequently, the left front of Rolin’s vehicle struck the right front of Byrdharl’s vehicle.

Ebbetts & Sonora Passes to Remain Closed an Additional 3 to 5 Weeks

Bear Valley, CA... The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced that Ebbetts Pass/State Route 4 (SR-4) and Sonora Pass/SR-108 will not open for Memorial Day weekend. While Caltrans always strives to have these mountain passes open by the holiday weekend, the impact from one of California’s wildest winters in decades is requiring a massive cleanup. SR-108 SnowCaltrans is anticipating that Ebbetts Pass and Sonora Pass will both be open within three to five weeks. Currently, eastbound travelers on Ebbetts Pass can go to the east end of Lake Alpine, while eastbound travelers on Sonora Pass can go as far as Kennedy Meadows.

Social Media Posts Lead to School Closing for the Day.

Sonora, CA...From the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department..."Due to unsubstantiated social media posts Curtis Creek Elementary School decided to close today as a precautionary measure. There is no credible threat to the school at this time. The Sheriff’s Office has investigators looking into the situation and more information will be provided as it is obtained. We all have the community and schools best interest at heart and will work diligently to ensure everyone’s safety"
