Valley Springs, CA....For many years, East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has conducted public boat excursions on our reservoirs each winter in search of bald eagles and other birds and wildlife. We are fortunate to once again offer this opportunity to our local community. Due to cancellations, several seats have become available for this Saturday, January 11th – it’s not too late to call if you’re interested. January is National Mentoring Month: Be Someone Who Matters to Someone Who Matters |

Angels Camp, CA...his January marks the 13th annual National Mentoring Month, a campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring programs and connecting more of our community’s young people with caring adults. Here in Calaveras County, the Calaveras County Office of Education administers two youth mentoring programs: the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, which supports 25-30 matches at a time between children and caring adult friends; and the FNL Mentoring Program, which connects up to 30 middle school students with high school mentors each year. Both the Calaveras County Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors annually recognize National Mentoring Month and express their gratitude for our community’s volunteer mentors....

San Andreas, CA...Seasonal flu [influenza] activity has been increasing dramatically across the United States and areas of California over the past week. The cases have included young and middle aged adults as well as those at high risk of serious illness and death. To date, four flu linked deaths have been reported in California in persons less than 64 years of age. Dean Kelaita, MD, County Health Officer, stated, “No flu deaths have been reported in Calaveras County to date.” ....
