Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office K-9 "Buster" Is On Duty & Ready To Serve |

San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office would like to introduce “Buster” to the community. Buster is Dutch Sheppard narcotic detection canine. This is the first canine in over 14 years for the department. The Sheriff’s Office recognized the need for a canine however, funding for the program has always been the determining factor. The funding hurdle was overcome largely in part from a partnership with a local non-profit organization Friends of Calaveras Sheriff Office. Friends of the Sheriff organization stepped up and provided 100% funding for the purchase, training, and equipment needed for the program. Friends of the Sheriff have also pledged to continue their support to the program by assisting with monthly and yearly financial needs of the canine team...

San Andreas, CA...Monday, June 2, 2014 at 8:00 AM, the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will suspend outdoor burning within State Responsibility Areas of Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Eastern Stanislaus County and Eastern San Joaquin County. These restrictions will remain in effect until further notice....

Usually these are almost perfunctory and his removal is surprising in light of the fact that from the outside looking in he was highly regarded and has outwardly provided competent leadership....

Ray Pekarcik honored as May 2014 Mentor of the Month |

Valley Springs, Ca...The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program has chosen Valley Springs resident Ray Pekarcik as its Mentor of the Month for May 2014. Ray has been matched with his 16-year-old mentee for just over a year. In that time, Ray says that he has enjoyed watching his mentee grow into a more mature and outgoing young man. “When I first met Ray’s mentee, he told me that he wanted a mentor who was smarter than he is—that he needed a man who could challenge him intellectually,” said Colleen Dolan, Coordinator of Mentoring Programs for the Calaveras County Office of Education...

Calaveras County, Ca...As of March 2014 there were 495 confirmed pertussis cases in California. Calaveras Public Health Services has received notification of two confirmed pertussis cases in the County. Both cases are school-aged residents. Pertussis is a disease of the lungs and throat caused by bacteria. Pertussis starts like a cold with a runny nose and cough that gets worse. The cough usually lasts more than two weeks. The cough occurs in spasms that may cause a “whoop” sound when the person tries to catch their breath. It can be so severe that a person will vomit afterwards. Pertussis can be prevented with a vaccine... |
