Calaveras County’s Gail Belmont Veteran of the Year

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 06/27/2014 01:59 PM
Sacramento, Ca – Senator Tom Berryhill (R- Twain Harte) paid tribute to Calaveras county resident, Staff Sergeant Gail Belmont, as his 2014 Veteran of the Year. Belmont was given a Senate Resolution honoring her service at the seventh annual Veterans Recognition Luncheon at Sacramento’s Convention Center. Belmont’s service began just after her 18th birthday. Her first assignment was to play Taps at the funeral of fallen soldiers during the Vietnam War. Her patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve have continued to this day, long after her military service ended. Gail Belmont founded Quilts of Honor in 2010, a nonprofit, volunteer organization that honors servicemen and veterans suffering from combat related injuries and wounds, with handmade patriotic quilts. The organization now has chapters in Wisconsin, Texas, Kansas, Virginia and Idaho but the heart of this volunteer organization remains in the foothills of the 14th Senate District as well as the Central Valley. Three hundred volunteer quilters from Amador, Tuolumne, Oakdale and Turlock provide about 2,000 quilts a year to our returning heroes...

"It was an awesome experience, especially being a female from the Vietnam era," Gail said.

Congratulations, Gail!

Fireworks Not Allowed Everywhere

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/27/2014 06:37 PM
San Andreas, CA... Each year illegal and misused fireworks cause serious injuries and damaging wildfires. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is taking a zero tolerance stand against anyone possessing, transporting or using illegal fireworks. The penalties for possessing, transporting or using illegal fireworks ranges from a misdemeanor up to felony charges plus the cost incurred for fire suppression. Illegal fireworks in California are those that explode, leave the ground, or move about uncontrollably. Illegal fireworks include sky rockets, bottle rockets, and roman candles. Use of any fireworks which causes an injury or fire may result in a citation or arrest...

How The Glass Buster Was Cured By The Glass Doctor ~ by Terry Grillo

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/24/2014 08:21 AM
Volcano, CA...It began as a normal Saturday, with a few chores and projects - all quite pleasant - and quickly crashed into grief all around me. My wife asked me to hang a very old, hand-colored photograph of her grandparents. It is their wedding photo and dates from around the First World War, so it is probably a century old. Held in a lovely old frame, it’s covered with the kind of raised and curved glass popular in those days, but now found rarely and in antique shops. Joseph Kusic arrived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from his native Slovenia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the early years the 20th century. Three years later he sent for his intended after she told him that if he didn't get busy and do something about their relationship she was going to marry a fellow from the next village....

Mark Borchin, owner of the Glass Doctor in Jackson, Amador County, holds the restored glass with antique frame and photo that the author dropped right in front of his wife. The photo, frame and new glass, and the ham-fisted hanger survive, thanks to Mr. Borchin.
