Countywide Math Mini Bowl Competition Goes Tech Savvy

San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Office of Education held its 36th Annual Math Mini-Bowl competition at Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks School in San Andreas on Thursday, May 26, 2016. Approximately 120 fifth and sixth grade students from Calaveras County Schools put their math skills to the test. The following schools were represented: Albert Michelson Elementary, Avery Middle School, Christian Family Learning Center, Hazel Fischer Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, Rail Road Flat Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Valley Springs Elementary, West Point Elementary

James Pryor, a 6th grader from Avery Middle School , won 1st place in the Blitz, tied for 2nd place in the Huddle, and was part of the 2nd place Bomb team. Kierian O'Donnell, a 5th grader from Hazel Fischer Elementary, took 2nd place in the Blitz, 1st place in the Huddle, and was part of the 1st place Bomb team.

Pettinger Road Stop Sign A Focal Point For CHP

Valley Springs, CA...Yesterday, our office responded to a minor injury traffic collision on Pettinger Rd and Messing Rd in Valley Springs. The party at fault failed to stop for the stop sign and collided with another vehicle in the intersection. This stop sign was erected last year due to the limited visibility in the intersection.

Common Activities Can Spark A Wildfire

San Andreas, CA...On Thursday, June 2, 2016 the Hunt Fire occurred on the 4800 block of Hunt Road, in Calaveras County. The Hunt Fire was dispatched at 10:37am and contained by 11:17am. The fire burned 26.5 acres of grass and no structures were threatened. Numerous engines, aircraft, a water tender, dozer and a crew from CAL FIRE as well as local government agencies responded. The fire was investigated and the cause was determined to be equipment use, specifically a riding lawnmower. A citation was issued to the property owner for violation of the Public Resources Codes related to equipment use and allowing a fire to burn lands of another.

Questions for Supervisor Candidates From Calaveras Taxpayers Association

Copperopolis, CA...The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association invited 7 candidates to answer 7 questions of issues of concern which were not addressed in other forums.  All responded and 5 agreed to participate. The candidates provided Yes, No and Maybe answers and had the opportunity for short comments. The questions with background reasons for posting the question are below, followed by answers and brief comments from candidates.  We also are conducting an online poll asking for public response to the questions as well.  The link is at the end below. We plan to publish the public result on this website.

3,536 Marijuana Plants Eradicated from Private Property

Valley Springs, CA...On 06-01-2016 Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office deputies eradicated 3,536 marijuana plants from a rural private property off of Hogan Dam Road between Copperopolis and Valley Springs. A local property owner called the Sheriff’s Office after finding two subjects trespassing on the private property. Sheriff’s Investigators then conducted aerial reconnaissance of the area and confirmed marijuana was being cultivated on the land.

Calaveras County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform one-way traffic control on eastbound and westbound State Route 26 (SR-26) from Shelton Road to SR-49 for striping operations. Crews will begin work on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, through Friday, June 3, 2016, from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Motorists should expect 10 minute delays. Alternate routes should be taken whenever possible.

Ione, CA...Firefighters are working a vegetation fire on Comanche Parkway near Oliver. Initial reports are that the fire was started by a lawn mower. We would like to thank BJ Cook for the photos. And so the season begins...let's be careful out there...
