Community Rallies For Joint Replacement Patient

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/20/2013 12:48 AM
Sonora, CA...Michael Freitas, a long-time resident and local business owner in Valley Springs, is receiving a special gift this Christmas. Freitas, who is only in his early 50s, suffers from arthritis so severe in both hips he walks with two canes and has difficulty just sitting in a chair because of severe restrictions in flexibility. In order to regain his mobility and flexibility, Freitas needs both hips replaced. But as a small business owner, he does not have health insurance to pay for the surgery and rehabilitation....

Paul Goldberg (husband of Stephanie Hull-Goldberg), Marie Freitas (wife of Michael Freitas), Michael Freitas (patient), Dr. Airell Nygaard (orthopedic surgeon), Tina Hunter (representative from DePuy, which supplied the hip prostheses)

Storage nixed, BOS strategic workshops, Calaveras broadband update, General Plan talk in January

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/20/2013 07:00 AM
San Andreas, CA...No Approval for Murphy’s Storage. Last Thursday, after hours of comments and discussion, county planning commissioners agreed the proposed Minarik RV storage project was NOT a good fit for a C-1 zoned parcel (adjacent to the entry to Forest Meadows). To watch the public hearing and hear reasons for rejection, visit CAP ’s December 12 Planning Commission meeting video page. The Minarik project will come back for formal action—consideration of Denial—at the January 9, 2014, PC meeting.

Local Schools Help The Food Bank

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/20/2013 09:23 AM
Angels Camp, CA...In an effort to provide a donation to the Resource Connection Food Bank, the Calaveras County Office of Education reached out to county schools asking for donations of canned and non-perishable food items. We received generous donations from Kathi Grover’s class at Albert Michelson School, Jacey Bray’s class at Bret Harte High School, and Jane Ferguson’s class at Mountain Oaks School. We wish to thank them as well as Bret Harte Leadership students Sean Krpan and Brandon Kelly, Calaveras River Academy students Mike Vasco, Alex Mooshi, and Austin Underhill for helping us build a canned food tree in our lobby. Because of the effort and generosity of these individuals and all others involved in the food drive, CCOE was able to make a sizeable donation to the food bank this holiday season...

San Andreas, CA....On December 12, 2013, 140 students from Calaveras Unified Schools had the opportunity to participate in the Calaveras Christmas to Remember shopping day. Students, with the help of many volunteers, shopped for warm winter clothing and shoes. Calaveras Unified staff and families want to thank the generous citizens and businesses in Calaveras County who donated and/or participated in this effort. This day would not have been possible without the kindness and generosity of Mary McIntire, Jeannie Holster, and the amazing staff at KMart in Martell. They welcomed the children with open arms and showed them such kindness and generosity...
