Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, CA...August 1, 2018 – On Sunday, July 29, 2018, Brian Hughes, 33, Captain of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots lost his life battling the Ferguson Fire on the Sierra National Forest. An official memorial website has been established in honor of Captain Hughes. There, the public can learn about him, upcoming memorial services, and where to send condolence letters or contributions. Governor Brown Lowers Capitol Flags in Honor of Fallen Firefighters, Secures Assistance to Support Communities Impacted by Carr Fire

Sacramento, CA...Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. has ordered Capitol flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of two firefighters who died while working on the Carr Fire in Shasta County – Redding Fire Prevention Inspector Jeremiah “Jeremy” Stoke and a bulldozer operator whose name has not been released. “Anne and I were devastated to learn about the deaths of these two heroes who lost their lives while protecting their fellow Californians,” said Governor Brown. “We honor them and all the first responders who are working day and night to protect life and property as wildfires continue to burn across the state.”

Valley Springs, CA...Sally Jane Smith ("Jay Bigler") resident of Valley Springs, Ca. 11-12-28 - 07-13-2018. Sally "Jay" was born in Flint, Michigan and grew up in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan. Jay is survived by her wife of 10 years, Stacey Hebrard of Valley Springs, Ca. She is also survived by her nieces Amy Heymann Patterson and Janet Powell, nephews Thomas and Fritz Heymann, and her great nieces Katharine, Barbara and Alyssa Patterson.

John Santiago Jr. 1943 - 2018

Valley Springs, CA...John Santiago Jr. born in Waipahu, Hi, on June 15, 1943 died July 19,2018 at his home in Burson, Ca. of Progress Supranuclear Palsy. John lived in Makaha and attended Waipahu High School before moving to California, he was a graduate of North Highland High School, American River J.C. and Chabot College. John served in the U. S .Army March 1964 to 1966 was an E-4 Specialist. John was employed as an industrial Maintenance Mechanic for over 44 years. ln San Leandro he was employed by Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical for over 2L years and Latchford Glass. Plant closers brought him to the Valley. John was a mechanic on the bottling line at Sebastian Winery in Lodi and later became a facility maintenance mechanic at Sebastian Winery became Turner Road Vintners. John retired after 21 years at the winery.

Ferguson Fire Claims Another Firefighter's Life

Yosemite, CA...This morning, park officials were informed that a firefighter from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks was killed in the line of duty on the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County. The firefighter’s identity is being withheld until appropriate family notifications have been made. The fatal incident occurred earlier this morning. At the time, the firefighter and his crew were engaged in a tactical firing operation on the east side of the Ferguson Fire.

Hotshot Captain Brian Hughes Passed Away this Mornings on 54,481 Acre Ferguson Fire

Awahanee, CA, July 29, 2018 - Brian Hughes, captain of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots out of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, died today in the line of duty on the Ferguson Fire. The fatal incident occurred earlier this morning. Hughes, 33, and his crew were operating in a complex area when he was struck by a tree. He was treated on scene, but passed away before he could be transported to a hospital.

White Pines, CA...Although he may not physically be with us anymore, his memory is very much alive. Ron Cooper moved to the Arnold area over 40 years ago. He proudly built his business and raised his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all whole knew him. Ron was not a “joiner” but definitely a giver. He would pass on joining your club or organization but would be the first to give you his time and support, assist financially or anything else you may need.

Washington, DC...Congressman McClintock delivered the following tribute to fallen fire fighter Braden Varney before the House of Representatives: Mr. Speaker: I rise to honor a hero of the Sierra and to mourn his tragic loss. Braden Varney, age 36, gave his life Saturday night fighting the Ferguson Fire, which continues to ravage the forests near Yosemite Valley and threaten the communities of Mariposa County.
