Rochelle Aline Pena 1958 - 2017

Valley Springs, CA....Valley Springs resident and elementary school teacher Rochelle Aline Pena passed away from peritoneal cancer at the age of 59 on August 25, 2017. She was born in San Francisco, CA on January 18, 1958. Rochelle graduated from Bret Harte high school before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition from San Jose State University. She and Rey treasured 35 wonderful years together after marrying on November 21, 1981.

US Navy Recovers Remaining USS John S. McCain Sailors aboard Ship

CHANGI NAVAL BASE, Republic of Singapore (NNS) -- U.S. Navy and Marine Corps divers have now recovered the remains of all 10 USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) Sailors.



CHANGI NAVAL BASE, REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE (August 21, 2017) Damage to the portside is visible as the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore, following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding. Veteran & Software Engineer Derrell Pulis Has Passed Away

Murphys, CA...We say goodbye to a member of our community. Derrell Pulis passed away 8/8/17 at home from complications related to Parkinson Disease, developed from his years of Military Service in Vietnam. Derrell retired Lt. Colonel from the Air Force after 20 years of service. Derrell spent a good part of his service as a navigator and finished his career as a financial officer at Travis Air Force Base.

Robert “Bob” Applegate 1941 - 2017 Eagle Scout, Veteran & CHP Officer

San Andreas, CA...Robert “Bob” Applegate born October 23, 1941 passed away earlier this week from a fall. Born in Idaho to John and Dorothy Applegate he was the eldest of three children. His sister Carolyn preceded him in death. His younger sister Kathryn Snyder resides in Kerrville with her husband Dr. Eugene Snyder. From an early age, Bob was both a civic leader and volunteer. At the age of 12, he was at that time, the youngest Boy Scout to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. His high school years were spent playing football and being the class president. This was the start of his leadership and volunteerism that continued throughout his lifetime.

Former Tulumne County Sheriff's Sergeant Mike Pershall Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver

Modesto, CA...Former Tuolumne County Sheriff's Deputy Killed by suspected drunk driver last night. From TCSO.."The Modesto Police Department suffered a tragic loss last night when Sergeant Mike Pershall was killed in a vehicle versus bicycle accident. Mike Pershall has been with MPD since 2012, previously with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office from 2008 to 2012. Mike was a good Cop, a good friend and this is truly a tragic loss. We were blessed to have Mike for the time he was with our Office. We are so very sorry for Mike’s wife, children, family and MPD. Our sincerest condolences, our hearts are heavy today."

Mountain Ranch, CA...David Ray Bean (Dave), Mountain Ranch, was born April 18, 1939, in Belle Fourche, SD, to George Burdette and Violet Margareet (Tope) Bean. They were cattle ranchers, and he learned at an early age to ride horses. Theirs was a minimal existence with no running water, no electricity, and certainly no telephone. He attended country schools and boarded in town for high school. He succumbed to a massive heart attack at home Sunday, August 13.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, John W. Earl and her children Marissa Earl,Megan Earl and John W. Earl Jr. of Valley Springs.Three grandchildren Bailey, Kinsley, and Brody of Wilseyville.Brother Joseph Cortez of Oklahoma.She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Billie Kay Coretz and her grandparents.

Rail Road Flat, CA...Lucas Nathaniel Bur was born August 23, 1986 at Jackson, CA. He was 30 years old. He grew up in Railroad Flat, CA, and had returned and lived there again for the last two years of his life. Lucas found his longed-for peace on July 25, 2017, in the National Forest in Calaveras County, CA., after 20 years of quietly battling depression.

Leroy Coleman Rader 1942 - 2017

San Andreas, CA...Leroy Coleman Rader was a 5th generation Calaveras County resident descendant of pioneer families. He was born October 20, 1942 to Coleman Rader of Glencoe and Ruth (Carlton) Rader of West Point. He attended West Pont elementary and then Calaveras High, graduating in 1960. He then married his high school sweet heart Sandy Oneto in 1962. They resided in Glencoe then Spring Valley before building their home on the family ranch outside of San Andreas on Bear Mountain in 1973 where they raised their two children.

Mokelumne Hill, CA...Arthur John Novotny, cherished Dad, Grandpa, Friend, passed away on August 12, 2017, at the age of 85. He was a longtime resident of Mokelumne Hill. Art was born in Stockton, CA to Eleanor and John Novotny. He attended elementary school in White Pines and graduated from Bret Harte High School in 1950. Art worked as an Accountant/Controller in both Calaveras and Amador Counties.
