Elmer “Buddy” Owens passed away quietly in his sleep at UC DAVIS Medical Center, in Sacramento Ca. after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's on Wednesday August 24th, 2011. He was with his Wife Opal “Jodi” Owens. Mr. Owens lived and worked in Calaveras County for over forty years He was born in Marlow Oklahoma on December 3rd 1928. In Loving Memory of Louis Leo Bremer 1919~2011

Louis Leo Bremer died August 20, 2011, at the age of 91 years. Mr. Bremer was taken to St. Joseph’s Mark Twain Hospital on May 5, 2011, and was released to St. Joseph’s Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital May 9, 2011, where he received physical therapy and was doing quite well until recently. Mr. Bremer developed sepsis and was transferred back to St. Joseph’s Mark Twain Hospital on August 19, 2011, in the late afternoon and passed away early morning on August 20th.....

Lester William Wakefield January 21st, 1927 - August 18, 2011

Murphys, CA...Lester William Wakefield passed away at his home in Murphys on August 18, 2011, his 61st wedding anniversary, with his loving family at his side. Bill, as he was known to his many friends and family, lived and worked in Calaveras County for most of his life. He was born in Merced, and attended Murphys Grammar School. He graduated from Salinas High School in December of 1944, and with his father’s permission entered the US Navy where he served the remainder of World War 2 on the USS Tryon, a hospital ship. He returned to his beloved Murphys and worked in the US Forest Service’s Blister Rust camps for 3 or 4 years. He then began his happiest workdays at the Blagen Lumber Company where he worked until the mill closed in 1962. He met the love of his life, Georgia, who was visiting the area, in the summer of 1950, and persuaded her to delay her college career and become his wife. Bill and Georgia raised their three children in Murphys, where they lived for over 58 years...

Magdolna (Magda) Poletzski (Szabo) was born in Budapest, Hungary and met her husband to be, Karoly (Charles) Szabo, as a childhood playmate when she was only 2 years old and Charles was 4 years old in Hungary. They became high school sweethearts and World War II caused a delay which lasted until Charles returned from the war and they were married in Budapest, Hungary in 1948 (A marriage lasting over 63 years). Arnold, CA....Charlotte Eileen Jamieson, age 63, born November 8, 1947 in Joliet, Il, passed away August 15, 2011 at her residence in Avery, CA. Charlotte worked as a radiologic technologist for the Arnold Family Medical Center. Charlotte was an avid hiker and gardener. DOD Identifies Navy Seals and other Service Members Killed In CH-47 Crash

Washington, DC...The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of 30 servicemembers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Aug. 6 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed...

Governor and First Lady Honor Four California Servicemen

SACRAMENTO – On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor four California servicemen who bravely gave their lives in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to their family and friends at this difficult time. In memorial, Governor Brown ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol today. The families of the servicemen will receive a letter of condolence from the Governor.
