Caltrans Clears Mountain Passes Each Spring to Open High-Altitude State Highways for Spring and Summer Travel

Stockton, CA...In this Caltrans News Flash, you get a front-row seat as Caltrans maintenance crews clear highways, cutting through steep and narrow mountain passes, including the Sonora pass in Tuolumne County, and the Ebbetts and Monitor passes in Alpine County. Snow and ice must be shoved off the road, rocks and debris must be removed, brush has to be cut back and sometimes 300-ton boulders must be blasted before the highway is safe for public travel. These mountain passes typically close in the fall, and Caltrans begins clearing the passes in April.
Saturday, May 7th, Trail Building Memorial for Dave Edney

Arnold, CA...Dear Arnold Rim Trail Equestrians, Cyclists, and Hikers, It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to Dave Edney who passed away earlier this year suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack. Almost everyone who came into contact with the Arnold Rim Trail Association over the past eight years knows "Captain Dave". He led our volunteer trailbuilding days, he led the Cougar Rock sunset hikes, he was a steering committee member, and he was the Captain of the Ebbetts Pass Aid Station for the Death Ride which ARTA has been staffing for the past four years. Everyone loved Dave for his energy, his indefatigable spirit, and his infectious smile.

Arnold, CA...May is the month when many women celebrate Mother’s Day. Maybe breakfast in bed, homemade cards, extra hugs….? It’s pretty wonderful to feel so cared for. But how well do you take care of yourself—whether or not you’re a mother? One big piece of self-care involves regular screening tests, which can prevent many health problems—or help you nip them in the bud as early as possible. Life can get hectic, though, so it’s easy to forget or to put it off. Here is a brief overview of the tests the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends for women. Remember: these are guidelines only. Talk with your doctor about your unique needs.
