Magnetic 3-D-Printed Structures Crawl, Roll, Jump, and Play Catch, Technique Could be used for Remotely Controlled Biomedical Devices.

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/14/2018 08:44 AM
Cambridge, MA...MIT engineers have created soft, 3-D-printed structures whose movements can be controlled with a wave of a magnet, much like marionettes without the strings. The menagerie of structures that can be magnetically manipulated includes a smooth ring that wrinkles up, a long tube that squeezes shut, a sheet that folds itself, and a spider-like “grabber” that can crawl, roll, jump, and snap together fast enough to catch a passing ball. It can even be directed to wrap itself around a small pill and carry it across a table.

Update on Teens, Social Media & Technology 2018 ~ Pew Research Center

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/03/2018 09:10 AM
Washington, DC...YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat are the most popular online platforms among teens. Fully 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online 'almost constantly". Until recently, Facebook had dominated the social media landscape among America’s youth – but it is no longer the most popular online platform among teens, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Today, roughly half (51%) of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 say they use Facebook, notably lower than the shares who use YouTube, Instagram or Snapchat.

FCC Commissioner Rosenworcel Says Net Neutrality to End June 11th

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/10/2018 08:31 AM
Washington, DC....“Today, the FCC gave notice that net neutrality protections will be taken off the books on June 11. This is profoundly disappointing. The agency failed to listen to the American public and gave short shrift to their deeply held belief that internet openness should remain the law of the land.  The agency turned a blind eye to serious problems in its process—from Russian intervention to fake comments to stolen identities in its files.

Daimler Tests New Drone Delivery System...This One May Be A Tipping Point

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/29/2017 08:50 AM
Stuttgart/Zurich. In a global first, online orders were delivered in Zurich between 25 September and 13 October with the aid of Vans & Drones. In partnership with Matternet and siroop.ch, Mercedes-Benz carried out a unique pilot project to test on-demand delivery of e-commerce orders – and it was a resounding success, particularly as unlike comparable systems this trial of a van and drone solution was carried out over an urban area and over a period of three weeks. On 28 September, after the initial successful trials, a large group of journalists was invited to watch live as the first official drone landing on the specially equipped Mercedes-Benz Vito took place during a press presentation.

Artificial Muscles Give Soft Robots Superpowers & Can Lift 1,000 Times Their Weight! By Lindsay Brownell

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/27/2017 08:34 PM
Cambridge, MA...Soft robotics has made leaps and bounds over the last decade as researchers around the world have experimented with different materials and designs to allow once rigid, jerky machines to bend and flex in ways that mimic and can interact more naturally with living organisms. However, increased flexibility and dexterity has a trade-off of reduced strength, as softer materials are generally not as strong or resilient as inflexible ones, which limits their use.
