Beating the Heat in the Gold Country - Huffington Post "In The Gold Country" Feature

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/22/2014 12:32 PM
Mokelumne Hill, Ca - The Hotel Leger, a few hours out of the Bay Area, hasn't changed all that much from the gold rush. And local bands in the bars on weekend are probably a tradition as old as the hotel. I have to admit, for those of us who live any reasonable distance off of Main Street, after awhile you learn to either enjoy it, wander over for a glass of wine to check it out, or on "open mike" night, put Pandora on your TV at home and turn it up a bit. It's okay. We support it around here. We love our old hotel. But on Sundays during the summer, between 1 and 4, we throw our windows open. Or work in the garden. Or wander over to the hotel for a pulled pork sandwich. Sunday afternoons are Blues and Barbecue at the hotel....

Summer Storms Mean Beautiful and Powerful Displays of Nature

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/22/2014 12:59 PM
Bear Valley and Lake Alpine, Ca... This past weekend, as many experienced, there were quite the summer storms occurring. While the rain was welcome, the lightning made everyone wary. However, for a couple of visitors to our beautiful area, the lightning made for a fantastic photo op. Ryan Schill, from Cupertino, captured an amazing lightning strike while staying at cabin in Bear Valley, and reported that the rain quickly put out the fire that the lightning started. Rachael Manners was staying in a cabin in Pacific Valley, and drove to Lake Alpine, where she was able to snap a few photos of the lightning storm above the mountains. Check out these beautiful photos by talented young photographers!

Red Cross Urges Safety and Preparedness as Busy, Drought-Fueled Wildfire Season Continues

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/16/2014 08:53 PM
Sacramento, Ca – As California continues to endure an historic drought, summer heat and exceptionally dry conditions have given way to numerous wildfires throughout the state. In the Capital Region, firefighters continue to battle the Bully Fire in Shasta County, which has burned more than 8,700 acres. Red Cross volunteers are currently operating an evacuation shelter at the Igo-Oso Elementary School in the town of Igo, where we are providing shelter, food, and emergency resources for evacuated residents. The Bully Fire is the latest incident to impact our state and region, highlighting just how vulnerable our communities are to the dangers of wildfires. “Wildfires are a threat in our region every year, and the abnormally dry conditions have only magnified those risks,” said Kathleen Weis, Chief Executive Officer for the Red Cross Capital Region. “It is critical that everyone take steps to be ready, and know what to do should you be faced with a wildfire emergency.”...

Connecting With People Through Images

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/11/2014 10:16 PM
Murphys, Ca...Mountain Christian Fellowship in Murphys will be hosting an international photography and film event on July 20th at 6PM at their worship center on Highway 4. The event will highlight the work of Rob Darby, native of Angles Camp, now living in Thailand. Through printed images and video, Rob will share stories from his travels in Europe and Asia. His wife, Veronica, will also be sharing her own stories about the work she is doing against human trafficking in Thailand. “I enjoy using my photography as a tool to connect with people and to add value to their lives.” says Rob. “Recently, I’ve been able to work more with video and film-making. I’m part of a team that makes films for indigenous people groups. Films made in their language, using their own people as actors. Films they can relate to. It’s awesome to think that for many of these people groups, ours are the first films they have ever seen in their own language!” Rob will be showing his team’s most recent film at this event. It’s a story of a young Buddhist boy from southern Thailand who has been stigmatised with bad karma, but finds acceptance through his kind uncle who shares his same struggle...

Letter to the Editor Concerning World Population Day,

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/10/2014 10:27 PM
World Population Day, observed annually on July 11, was created by the United Nations in recognition of the need to raise awareness about the problems created by growing human populations. Not long ago, on July 11, 1987, the world's population reached Five Billion people. Today there are more than Seven Billion people and we are adding 227,000 more each day. Common sense tells us that this cannot go on forever. We are already running out of space, food, and clean water in many places the world. Indeed, climate change, and the concurrent crisis- species extinction - are the result of too many people living in disregard of earth's limits. The toll of wildlife has been devastating: species are going extinct at a rate 1,000 times greater than what is normal. 25% of ALL species are now endanger of extinction. The number one cause is habitat destruction by people. This impending huge loss of biodiversity will cost us much more than our most cherished creatures- orangutans, rhinos, elephants, tigers, pandas, etc. It will imperil the stability of the web-of-life on which we all depend....

The conference, which is organized by the International Center for Leadership in Education (http://leadered.com/), has identified schools across the nation and around the world that have made tremendous strides in student learning. Twenty-two of those schools (six elementary schools, six middle schools and ten high schools) presented their strategies at the conference.

A Note to the 2014 High School Graduates from the California Highway Patrol

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 06/05/2014 05:45 PM
Sonora, Ca...The California Highway Patrol would like to congratulate the graduates of 2014. We would like all graduates to please be safe in their activities after graduation and hope all would attend the Sober Grad parties. Few rites of passage are more heavily invested with the symbolism of hope than a high school graduation. Few accidental deaths are more tragic than those of buoyant young adults whose lives are stolen by alcohol or other drugs during that period of high triumph marking completion of a major educational challenge. Sober Graduation is a solution that has emerged as a community-wide venture to make the graduation period alcohol and drug free. If you aren't attending a Sober Grad event please ensure you don't drink and drive. You have a bright future ahead of you, with unlimited amounts of options to choose for your success.
