The Malfunctioning U.S. Government ~ From Sabrina Julian Investment Services

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/09/2013 11:31 PM
Angels Camp, CA...The U.S. government is in a shutdown. According to "Google," a shutdown is "a closure of a factory or system, typically a temporary closure due to a malfunction or for maintenance." Based on this definition, when we look at what has transpired in Washington, it's clear that there's a malfunction in the government. The two primary political parties are involved in another fiscal fist fight over federal spending, the debt ceiling and, indirectly, The Affordable Care Act (also referred to as ObamaCare). Beginning on October 1st, for the eighteenth time since 1976, Congress's inability to pass a budget and fund government operations has resulted in the shutdown of non-essential government operations. Despite fairly lame overtures by both parties to come to some type of agreement, the primary issue at hand is ObamaCare. The Republicans wish to delay, alter or repeal President Obama's hallmark initiative, while Democrats have asked for budget talks to continue without strings attached...

Setting Up Your Estate to Minimize Probate Provided by Sabrina Julian

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/07/2013 09:41 AM
Angels Camp, CA...Probate subtly reduces the value of many estates. It can take more than a year in some cases, and attorney's fees, appraiser's fees and court costs may eat up as much as 5% of a decedent's accumulated assets. Think tens of thousands of dollars, perhaps more. What do those fees pay for? In many cases, routine clerical work. Few estates require more than that. Heirs of small, five-figure estates may be allowed to claim property through affidavit, but this convenience isn't extended for larger estates...

The Inflation Investment You’ve Never Heard Of ~By Cory Burnell, MBA, CFA

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/06/2013 04:18 PM
Valley Springs, CA...Many investors are concerned about the risk of increased inflation in light of the Federal Reserve’s unprecedented balance sheet expansion from $900 billion to $3.1 trillion since 2008. This concern is warranted and begs the question how to invest to profit from inflation and protect one’s purchasing power. The most common answers are to invest in commodities such as precious metals, oil, gasoline, agriculture, etc., or Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS), and while these may be good answers are there any others? I’m glad you asked, because there’s one you’ve probably never considered. Senior secured floating rate loans (a.k.a. “Bank Loans”) have historically offered a relatively high correlation with inflation along with attractive returns. For example, in the 10-year period ended 9/30/2012 the Morningstar Bank Loan category had a 0.37 correlation with inflation while the DJ-UBS Commodity Index only provided a 0.24 correlation. Interestingly, U.S. Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS), typically purchased by investors to hedge inflation risks, only provided a 0.07 correlation with inflation.*
