Vietnam Veteran Marks 10 years of Walks to Raise Money for UCLA’s Operation Mend Ric Ryan has raised $125,000 to Support Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/13/2018 03:38 PM
Murphys, CA...Ric Ryan, 72, fought for his country in Vietnam, has had both knees and one hip replaced and, in August, was struck by a car at a crosswalk. The car accident took him out of action for several weeks, but soon he was back trekking along the streets near his hometown of Murphys, California to raise money for a UCLA program that helps wounded veterans of post 9-11 conflicts, most of whom weren’t even born when Ryan was a Marine fighting in the jungles of Vietnam.

Prevent Flu this Season by Getting a Flu Shot

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/01/2018 07:02 AM
San Andreas, CA...Dean Kelaita, Health Officer, is urging Calaveras County residents to get vaccinated against influenza (the flu) this season as soon as possible. In California, flu usually begins to increase in late November or December. It takes a couple of weeks after vaccination for the body to respond fully, so now is the time to get vaccinated to have the best protection as the flu season begins. “Deaths related to flu are tragic reminders that the flu virus needs to be taken very seriously,” said Dr. Kelaita. “A yearly flu shot is the best way to protect against infection and prevent others from coming down with the flu.” A person with flu may be contagious and infect others before they even feel sick. This season your health care provider may be offering several different kinds of injectable influenza vaccines, such as the regular version or high dose version for those over 65. Calaveras County Public Health expects there to be enough injectable vaccine to meet the expected demand. Each year, flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and, sometimes, tens of thousands of deaths in the United States.

Geneva....Every day around 93% of the world’s children under the age of 15 years (1.8 billion children) breathe air that is so polluted it puts their health and development at serious risk. Tragically, many of them die: WHO estimates that in 2016, 600,000 children died from acute lower respiratory infections caused by polluted air. A new WHO report on Air pollution and child health: Prescribing clean air examines the heavy toll of both ambient (outside) and household air pollution on the health of the world’s children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The report is being launched on the eve of WHO’s first ever Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health.
