San Andreas, CA...Two “Mammo-GLAM” events marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October give local women the opportunity to overcome fear of a critical health screening by surrounding it with some quality girlfriend time. Think of it as “girls-night-out” with a serious purpose – helping women overcome mammogram fears and shape a healthy future. Angels Camp, CA...Wow it was a year October 15th that I got a second chance, my name is Charli Jo Zumbach and a lot of you know at 6 months of age I underwent a liver transplant at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. My doctors are happy with my progress and I went from taking 11 meds. to just 2! I'm a healthy energetic 18 month girl that keep my mommy and daddy busy.

Mokelumne Hill, CA...Mark Borchin of Mokelumne Hill is the picture of health – blessed with low blood pressure and high metabolism. To keep it that way he is an active runner, plays basketball every week and hikes with his wife. But, he is always aware that stress looms as a big health threat. Mark is sharing his personal experience as a spokesperson for the local “Tackle Your Health” awareness campaign during Men’s Health Month in November. This public education effort is co-sponsored by Mark Twain Medical Center and the Mark Twain Health Care District.
Special Screening of “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opioid Addict,” November 7, Calaveras Performing Arts Center

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County had a rate of 124 opioid prescriptions per 100 residents in 2016, according to the California Department of Public Health. To better understand what this means for our community, the public is invited to a free educational event on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at the Calaveras Performing Arts Center at Calaveras High School in San Andreas. The evening will begin at 5pm with refreshments and an informal opportunity to chat with experts and gather resources about opioid addiction and local recovery services. A screening of the 50-minute hard-hitting documentary “Chasing the Dragon” will take place at 6pm, followed by a panel discussion featuring local medical and behavioral health experts and individuals sharing their experiences with opioid addiction.
Men's Health is Workshop Focus for the Month of November

San Andreas, CA...Men’s health is the topic of a free workshop on Nov. 9 at Mark Twain Medical Center. “Tackle Your Health” is the theme for the 10 a. m. to noon event focusing on lifestyle and health resources for men. A variety of presenters and health resource organizations will be featured and lunch is included. There is limited seating. Call 754-5919 for reservations and information. “Tackle Your Health” is part of MTMC’s ongoing series of “A Plan 4 Me” free planning workshops. It is co-sponsored by MTMC and the Mark Twain Health Care District. The district is providing a donated San Francisco 49ers DeForest Buckner laser-engraved football valued at $50 to be awarded at the workshop along with “Tackle Your Health” tee-shirts.
Novel Treatment Causes Cancer to Self-Destruct Without Affecting Healthy Cells

Bronx, NY...Scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine have discovered the first compound that directly makes cancer cells commit suicide while sparing healthy cells. The new treatment approach, described in today’s issue of Cancer Cell, was directed against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells but may also have potential for attacking other types of cancers.

Diehl brings more than 25 years of executive health care leadership to the committee, and further solidifies a partnership between the university and MTMC.
