Off The Beaten Path 10K/5K Run/Walk to Raise Funds for Mind Matters Clinic

Murphys, CA...Competitive runners, and people who just enjoy a stroll in the verdant countryside, are invited to take part in the 7th annual Off the Beaten Path on Saturday, April 28 in Murphys Community Park. The money raised will go to support Mind Matters, the Murphys based non-profit clinic that treats autism and other learning disorders.

Multistate Outbreak of E. Coli Infections Linked to Chopped Romaine Lettuce

Atlanta, GA...Eighteen more ill people have been added to the CDC investigation. Five more states have reported ill people: Alaska, Arizona, California, Louisiana, and Montana. Nine more hospitalizations have been reported, including two people who developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.  Highlights from the CDC...Information collected to date indicates that chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region could be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 and could make people sick.

Volunteers Plant the Seeds of Kindness at Mark Twain Medical Center

San Andreas, CA...The month of April is dedicated to honoring all the volunteers in a community and encouraging volunteerism overall. Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation honored the hospital volunteers with an appreciation lunch on April 16th. With the theme “Volunteers Plant the Seeds of Kindness” the event highlighted their many hours spent spreading kindness throughout the hospital and family medical centers. The hospital benefits from 26 human volunteers and three pet volunteers who contributed a combined total of more than 5,100 hours of service annually.

Mind Matters Off the Beaten Path Fundraiser

Murphys, CA...Mind Matters is holding its 7th Annual Off the Beaten Path fundraiser on Saturday, April 28th in Murphys Community Park. The money raised will support those individuals and families who are affected by autism spectrum disorder, ADD/ADHD. and/or learning disabilities. The event is open to all ages and includes a 5K walk and a 10K race. The 5K goes out to Ironstone and back. The 10K goes further out Six Mile Road and back. Medallions will be awarded to men and women in each of the four age categories in the 10K run. The walk is a lovely alternative for those who want to walk, stroll, and ride bicycles or tricycles. Families with those in strollers are also encouraged.

For our 2nd Annual Central Fire Mud Run we are planning approximately 16 obstacles along the route that will range from fire fighter skills to strength and endurance tests. Participants will start and finish at the Mountain Ranch Park in the heart of Mountain Ranch. All participants will receive a 2018 Stop, Drop & Mud T-shirt.

Night Owls Have Higher Risk of Early Death

Chicago, IL..."Night owls" -- people who like to stay up late and have trouble dragging themselves out of bed in the morning -- have a higher risk of dying sooner than "larks," people who have a natural preference for going to bed early and rise with the sun, according to a new study from Northwestern Medicine and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom (UK). The study, on nearly half a million participants in the UK Biobank Study, found owls have a 10 percent higher risk of dying than larks. In the study sample, 50,000 people were more likely to die in the 6½ -year period sampled.

FDA Approves Marketing of AI Based Device to Detect Diabetes-Related Eye Problems

Washington, DC...The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is permitting marketing of the first medical device to use artificial intelligence to detect greater than a mild level of the eye disease diabetic retinopathy in adults who have diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high levels of blood sugar lead to damage in the blood vessels of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss among the more than 30 million Americans living with diabetes and the leading cause of vision impairment and blindness among working-age adults.
