Salk Research Points to “Exercise-in-a-pill” Boosting Athletic Endurance by 70 Percent

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/05/2017 09:57 PM
La Jolla, CA...Every week, there seems to be another story about the health benefits of running. That’s great—but what if you can’t run? For the elderly, obese or otherwise mobility-limited, the rewards of aerobic exercise have long been out of reach. Salk Institute scientists, building on earlier work that identified a gene pathway triggered by running, have discovered how to fully activate that pathway in sedentary mice with a chemical compound, mimicking the beneficial effects of exercise, including increased fat burning and stamina. The study, which appears in Cell Metabolism on May 2, 2017, not only deepens our understanding of aerobic endurance, but also offers people with heart conditions, pulmonary disease, type 2 diabetes or other health limitations the hope of achieving its benefits pharmacologically.

Arnold & Groveland, CA...Itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, fatigue…. These are just a few of the signs of seasonal allergies—also known as hay fever.1 And get ready: It looks like we may have a real doozy of an allergy season this year.2 Milder winter temperatures in places can cause plants to pollinate early. And a rainier spring leads to quick plant growth, as well as an increase in mold. 1  Allergic reactions mostly occur when your body responds to a “false alarm.” And, as you well know, there isn’t a cure for seasonal allergies. But there’s no reason to let this time of year take all the spring out of your step! Arm yourself with information.

Wounded Warrior Project Applauds VA Accountability Executive Order

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/27/2017 10:58 PM
Washington, DC...Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) joined other veterans service organizations to support an executive order that will strengthen the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). President Donald Trump signed the order to allow VA to hold employees accountable. "The overwhelming majority of VA employees serve our veterans honorably, and we applaud their service and commitment to our veterans and their families. There are, however, instances where employees have been negligent in their duties," said WWP CEO Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Mike Linnington. "While VA needs authority to hold employees at every level accountable, we are also encouraged by the VA secretary's commitment to developing values-based leaders who go the extra mile in service to veterans and their families. Wounded Warrior Project is committed to working with VA and other veterans service organizations to ensure these changes occur."
