San Andreas, CA – Two Calaveras youths were honored by the White House, receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The Calaveras High School students, Brianna Gill and Guillermo Hernandez, have been members of the Explorer program with the San Andreas office of the California Highway Patrol for the past 2 years. The award is based on the hours of volunteer service. Brianna received the Silver Award while Guillermo received the Bronze Award. Lieutenant Dewayne Lewis presented the awards to the Explorers during a training session at the CHP office. Congratulations Brianna and Guillermo.

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce is resurrecting the successful "Leadership Calaveras" program established in 1996. Beginning in May 2015, individuals will have the opportunity to get a "Behind the Scenes" experience of Calaveras County. Leadership Calaveras provides a hands on approach to learning the significant issues facing communities as well as insight into the vital organizations working successfully within our County. During the course of this program, participants will be challenged mentally and physically in order to build qualities proving beneficial to leadership in both the work place and community....
Angels Camp, CA...Just quick note with more to follow. Ownership of the historic art deco gem that is the Utica Hotel in Historic Downtown Angels is set to change soon. Century 21 Sierra Property's Janet Cuslidge said that escrow is set to close on April 15th. No hiccups are expected to delay it (Knock on wood). The new owners plan to keep the property as a hotel, saloon, restaurant and retail complex. This is great news for Angels Camp and our entire area. More to follow as concrete details come in after the escrow closes.

Avery, CA...Monday March 30th was a sad day for Arnold residents because it was Mrs. Sproul's last day at the Avery Transfer Station. As the senior employee of GAMBI on site, she was recently offered the very worst job, sitting in a small outhouse checking identification at the gate, as mandated by the county. She declined, so now she will be applying for unemployment. Anyone who has used the facility knows how clean, pleasant smelling and efficient the transfer station has been during her tenure. We have Mrs. Sproul to thank for that. Please join me in recognizing her many years of fair, evenhanded service to our community....
